Frontispiece engraving of author. Title-page vignette. "These reflections were first written with a design to be published in a small volume, proper to be given away by well disposed persons at funerals, or on any other solemn occasion. But the editors of the Christian's Magazine, supposing they might be of some service to that useful and well-esteemed work, requested the author first to print them here, and afterwards to pursue his original design. Accordingly they were printed in separate chapters, and he hath reason to be satisfied with the reception they met with. His best prayers accompany them in their present form, that they may be useful to mankind." (William Dodd). Illustrated with two full-page engravings. Decorative tailpieces throughout. Front board almost detached but still holding. Some age wear to corners and parts of edges. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. 8vo, pp. v, [3], 205, [3] index; contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, smooth gilt-decorated spine with gilt lettering direct; some rubbing along the joints; all else very good. Engraved bookplate of Stoddart Douglas and an early owner's signature, "Margaret Brasier," at the top of the dedication page. Stoddart Douglas was a Liberal Party politician and was elected to Parliament in 1841, serving for 6 years. Dodd, who ran afoul of the law in 1777 for forgery, was condemned and hanged. Johnson interceded and wrote several papers on his behalf, even though they had only met once. A final petition to the King from Dodd was also written by Johnson, "who wrote a very sensible and feeling letter to Dodd himself, and also wrote in his own name an appeal to Jenkinson, the secretary at war" (DNB).
