Coachmakers [£2 2s 0d]', together with '[Lyon Clerk] for Extra Trouble [£6 6s 0d]'. The receipt is 1p., 12mo, and is docketted on the reverse 'Note of Fees of Arms For Miss William Boyd Robertson of Lawers | Novr. 1814.' It carries two embossed four pence tax stamps, is signed by 'James Horne | Lyon dept.', and reads: 'Edinburgh 18th. November 1814 | Received from Mrs. Robertson Williamson by the hands of Messrs. Dundas & Rollo W.S. Forty four pounds two shillings Stg being in full payment of the annexed note of the Fees of her Patent of Armorial Bearings.'.

Together they helped to found the Union of Democratic Control, in A. J. P. Taylor's judgement 'the most formidable Radical body ever to influence British foreign policy' (A. J. P. Taylor, Politicians, Socialism and Historians, 1982, 103). Trevelyan became the union's principal advocate in the Commons. His stubborn campaign for peace won him grudging respect, if not admiration and support.' 1p, 4to. On aged, creased and lightly-spotted paper. Folded for postage. Addressed to 'E. Dinnage Esq. / 38 Kimbereley Rd / Cambridge', the note reads. 'Dear Sir, / I enclose receipt for payment of literature already sent. / I remain / Yours truly / Charles Trevelyan.' Loosely inserted is a signed typed letter from Grant Richards to John Lane ask for royalties for the book + a receipt for £8 19 shillings with postage stamp of Queen Victoria and date March 19 1901. Colonial issue. ÔColonialÕ edition, of which only 500 copies were printed. Original publisher's beige cloth attractively illustrated in white Somewhat used though the boards still look good, some loosening of middle pages to binding but nothing actually detached. Feps have been unattractively covered in blue paper by a previous owner Interesting ownership inscription, bookplate and annotations (quotations from Wilde and Compton Mackenzie) of Philip Sainsbury of the Cayme Press, something of a later Uranian fringe figure who died young in the 1930s. This copy with faults and interesting provenance. Used vg minus.

Published in 1837, this is the second edition of this biography of the Shropshire Eccentric and Sportsman, John Mytton, the First Edition had 12 hand coloured plates, this the Second Edition has Eighteen, bound in a fine full Morocco Leather binding, decorated in gilt to boards and spine, page edges gilded all-round, loosely inserted in this copy is an original rent receipt made out to John Mytton of Halston dated 31st December 1833. The leather binding has been expertly rebacked retaining the original spine and endpapers, the repair is hardly noticeable, internally a few creases to page corners, occasional foxing to some page edges, the plates have some browning to edges, a couple of small edge tears with no loss else in good general condition.

While not specifically book related, a printed note at the bottom suggests this receipt was also used to verify payments for books.

Text: " Received the 22 Aprill 1706 of the Lord Fitzhardinge and of the [?] Tellers of the Receipt of her Maj[est]ies Exc[heque]r Six Thousand Nine Hundere Thirty one pounds in part of an Order for £10000 dated the 30th day of March 1706 for the Service of Her Majesty [?]". Purpose of money not yet known, but the number 6931 appears on the verso with the date. Presumably the Henry Cartwright who became Receiver General of Stamp Duties, dying in 1736.
