"This superb text by David Bohm, formerly Princeton University and Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at Birkbeck College, University of London, provides a formulation of the quantum theory in terms of qualitative and imaginative concepts that have evolved outside and beyond classical theory. Although it presents the main ideas of quantum theory essentially in nonmathematical terms, it follows these with a broad range of specific applications that are worked out in considerable mathematical detail." In den WarenkorbOriginal cloth. 24cm. Zustand: Gut. Fifth printing. VII,646 pages. Sonst gutes Exemplar. - Only the binding with slight signs of wear (the covers somewhat rubbed). Remaining traces of a removed bookplate on the endpaper. Name of an important German physicist on the upper edge of the endpaper ( Wikipedia!) Otherwise a good copy. ( We offer a lot of books on PHYSICS and MATHEMATICS on stock in EXCELLENT shape). Bohm obtained his Ph.D. under J. Robert Oppenheimer at the University of California, Berkeley. Due to his Communist affiliations, he was the subject of a federal government investigation in 1949, prompting him to leave the U.S. - David Bohm's "Quantum Theory" is widely regarded as one of the best expositions of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, penned by one of the most radical and influential theoretical physicists of the last century. Written during his tenure at Princeton before political circumstances led him to leave the United States, Bohm's work emerged during a time when the scientific community was deeply divided over quantum mechanics' foundational concepts. This book seeks to clarify the often ambiguous ideas presented by Bohr and Heisenberg, using the mathematical frameworks of de Broglie and Schroedinger, particularly emphasizing wave mechanics that challenge classical views of reality. In two previous papers (vol 85, 1952) a causal interpretation of the quantum theory was developed which involved the hypothesis that a quantum-mechanical system contains a precisely defined particle variable x but that, at present, we are restricted to calculating the probability density P(x, t) that the particle is at the position x. It was shown that the assumption that P(x, t)=|?(x, t)|2 is consistent, in the sense that if it holds initially, the equations of motion of the particles will cause this relation to be maintained for all time. In this paper, we extend the theory by showing that as a result of random collisions, an arbitrary probability density will ultimately decay into one with a density of |?(x, t)|2. Since all quantum-mechanical experiments to date have been concerned with statistical ensembles of systems that have been colliding with other systems for a very long time, it is therefore inevitable that as we draw samples from such ensembles. - Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 3000.
