Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 8vo (24 cm), xx, 229 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dust jacket slightly sunned and rubbed at extremities). First British edition. The third and concluding volume of Karl Popper's long-delayed Postscript to The Logic of Scientific Discovery, presenting his mature philosophy of quantum mechanics and completing the extensive revision and expansion of the ideas first advanced in Logik der Forschung (1934). Although composed principally between 1951 and 1956, the work remained unpublished for more than twenty-five years after production was interrupted during the 1956-57 proof stage by Popper's operations for detached retinas. Eventually edited for publication by W. W. Bartley III, the original single manuscript was divided into three complementary volumes, of which the present is the final instalment. The volume opens with Popper's 1982 preface, "On a Realistic and Commonsense Interpretation of Quantum Theory," followed by the substantial introductory essay, "Quantum Mechanics without 'the Observer'," in which he critiques the Copenhagen interpretation and examines the role of observation, the collapse of the wave packet, Everett's many-worlds interpretation, and the significance of configuration space. The main text is arranged in four chapters: "Understanding Quantum Theory and Its Interpretations"; "The Objectivity of Quantum Theory," developing Popper's propensity interpretation of probability and discussing wave-packet reduction; "Towards a Resolution of the Paradoxes of Quantum Theory," including extended analyses of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument, the two-slit experiment, and related conceptual problems; and a concluding "Metaphysical Epilogue," placing quantum theory within the broader history of scientific research programmes and the evolution of physical theory. Bartley's editorial foreword recounts the remarkable history of the Postscript, tracing its origin as a projected series of appendices to The Logic of Scientific Discovery, its expansion into the independent work Postscript: After Twenty Years, its long interruption following Popper's eye surgery, and its eventual publication in three separately titled but closely connected volumes: Realism and the Aim of Science, The Open Universe, and the present work. Representing Popper's most sustained engagement with the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics, the volume remains one of the classic twentieth-century critiques of instrumentalist and subjectivist interpretations of modern physics and an essential text for the study of the philosophy of science and quantum theory.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 3 volumes. 8vo (24 cm), xl, 420, [3] pp.; xxii, 185 pp.; xx, 229 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jackets (dust jackets slightly sunned and rubbed, edges somewhat stained, ownership entries on front endpapers). First editions. The long-delayed publication of Karl Popper's monumental Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery, one of the major philosophical works of the twentieth century and the most extensive development of the ideas first advanced in Logik der Forschung (1934; The Logic of Scientific Discovery). Conceived principally between 1951 and 1956 as a series of appendices expanding and revising the earlier work, the manuscript rapidly outgrew its original purpose and developed into an independent treatise substantially exceeding its predecessor in both scope and length. Originally typeset in galley proof during 1956-57 under the title Postscript: After Twenty Years, the work was intended to appear as a single companion volume to The Logic of Scientific Discovery. Publication was unexpectedly interrupted when Popper underwent a series of operations for detached retinas in both eyes. Although proofreading resumed after his recovery and extensive revisions were incorporated, the text remained essentially complete by 1962, after which Popper devoted his attention to later works. For more than two decades the unpublished manuscript circulated privately among Popper's students, colleagues, and correspondents in typescript and galley form, acquiring an almost legendary status within the philosophy of science. Publication finally became possible through the editorial work of W. W. Bartley III, Popper's former student and collaborator, who had assisted with the manuscript in the early 1960s and undertook its preparation for the press in 1978. At Bartley's suggestion, the enormous work was divided into three independent but closely related volumes, each approved by Popper and issued separately. Realism and the Aim of Science develops Popper's mature philosophy of scientific realism, examining induction, falsifiability, corroboration, verisimilitude, and the growth of scientific knowledge. The Open Universe presents Popper's sustained critique of scientific and metaphysical determinism, introducing the influential distinction between "clocks and clouds" and defending an indeterministic conception of nature compatible with objective scientific inquiry. Quantum Theory and the Schism in Physics applies these ideas to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, rejecting instrumentalist and subjectivist readings in favour of Popper's realist and propensity interpretation of probability, and concluding with an extended "Metaphysical Epilogue" on the philosophical implications of modern physics. Together the three volumes constitute Popper's fullest exposition of his mature philosophy of science, integrating his views on scientific method, realism, probability, causation, indeterminism, and quantum theory into a single systematic framework. They remain indispensable for the study of twentieth-century philosophy of science and the development of critical rationalism.

First editions. Three Volumes. 8vo. xxxix, [1], 420, [4]; xxii, 185, [1]; xviii, [2], 229, [1], pp. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, dust jackets (occasional ink marginal highlighting by the recipient; faint uneven toning to jackets with some minor wear and a few short closed tears to extremities, a very good set). London, Hutchinson.  Each volume inscribed by the author in the years of publication to the British physicist Michael Redhead (1929-2020), a colleague of Popper's at the London School of Economics, on the front free endpapers: 'To Michael Redhead from Karl Popper', and dated respectively '14-3-83', '13-8-82', and '12-9-82'. Presentation copies of Popper's Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery with all three volumes individually inscribed are notably scarce due to the individual volumes having been published separately between 1982 and 1983, compounded by an unfortunate history of individual inscribed volumes being sold separately. The recipient, Michael Redhead, was greatly influenced by Popper's work, a testament to Popper's critical influence both within the philosophy of science and - a rare distinction - on the methods of practising scientists. The Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery was evidently particularly influential, with Redhead publishing an article titled 'Popper and Quantum Theory' in 1995. Popper's three-part postscript to his first published book, The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1936), represents one of the major works on determinism and indeterminism. Although the culmination of Popper's work in the philosophy of physics (reaching its peak in the second volume, The Open Universe) the Postscript took almost three decades to be published. Originally intended as appendices to a later edition of The Logic of Scientific Discovery, the three works grew into a fully-fledged work which actually exceeded in length The Logic of Scientific Discovery. In 1956?7 The Postscript was all set to be published and already existed in the form of galley proofs but because of his deteriorating eyesight Popper was never able to proof-read the galleys and the whole project remained on hold for 25 years.

First UK edition of Volume 1, first US editions of Volumes 2 and 3, each a presentation copy and boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper to Popper's friend, the philosophical broadcaster Bryan Magee "to Bryan, with love, from Karl". Presentation sets to the same recipient are scarce in commerce, as such sets are often broken up. By March 1983, the date of Popper's inscription in Volume 1, the two men were friends and intellectual allies. Magee (1930-2019) wrote a book-length study of Popper's thought in 1985, where he described the Postscript as "written when he was at the height of his powers, and. [containing] some of his most valuable work" (p. 115). Ever an attentive reader, Magee has made a series of ink annotations to Volume 3, along with several notes on the rear pastedown summarizing Popper's positive arguments. He also recorded his first reading on the front free endpaper, firstly in London on 23 October 1983 and latterly in Reigate on 24-25 October. On the title page of Volume 3, Popper has noted that it was also published in England by Hutchinson. Volume 1 includes two loosely inserted postcards from around 2000 to Magee from "David" - almost certainly David Miller (1942-2024), Popper's former research assistant and later a developer of his philosophy. There, he bemoans the anti-Popperian shift at the London School of Economics since his death ("Colin Howson has published a book entitled Hume's Problem [title underlined] that makes the most determined attempts to rubbish what Karl said about induction - and to hand the palm to Fisher ('a deeper thinker') for recognizing that a failure to falsify a theory does not provide a reason in its favour. This is the L.S.E of today"). Miller was another long-time friend of Magee, proof-reading his 1987 study of the Great Philosophers.
