Gerard : Quantification in Biology NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS Harry Woolf (1923- 2003) was a US historian of science and director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1976 to 1987. He studied mathematics, physics and history at the University of Chicago, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1948 and a master's degree in 1949. He received his doctorate in the history of science from Cornell University in 1955. He then worked at Boston University, Brandeis University and the University of Washington before becoming professor of the history of science at Johns Hopkins University in 1961 (Willis K. Shepard Professor). He was chairman of his faculty there from 1961 to 1972 and provost from 1972 to 1976. He was then director of the Institute for Advanced Study until 1987.
