Some chipping to the head and foot of the spine. Light wear to the corners. There is some staining along the foot of the boards, this seeps through a bit to the endpapers. No following stains. Clean throughout. Scarce. A series of lectures by Scottish social anthropologist Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941), author of the massive and influential study "The Golden Bough." In these lectures Frazer looks at the role that superstition played in the early history of a number of standard institutions: Government, Private Property, Marriage, and Respect for Human Life; and suggests that all can be taken as evidence that sometimes "folly mysteriously deviates into wisdom, and good comes out of evil.".

8vo., Second and Best Edition, endpapers lightly browned; green cloth, gilt back, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a very good, bright, clean, crisp copy. With bookplate on front paste-down, and 2pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. Frazer's Discourse was first published in 1909.
