Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Small tears to some page edges, text remains unaffected. Front free endpaper to Common Prayer cut out with pencil inscription to rear free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Chipping to leather to spine. Slipcase has moderate edge wear with markings to panels and scuffing to edges.

Full roan leather, VG. both volumes unpaginated but approx 650pp, all edges gilt, in an attractive matching brown roan leather travelling case with hinged lid, extremities of the rasised bands a little rubbed from sliding into the case, corners bumped, , bottom of the case rather worn with some leather loss, the first 20 or so page of the Common Prayer darkened as if they have come into contact with grease/fat, an attactive little set. Diamond 48 edition. A small ( each volume is approx 3.5 inches tall & 2 inches wide , the pair together 1.5 inches thick ) liturgical & devotional set, nicely typset in a miniscule font. 225 grams.

The Psalms have a separate title-page also dated 1841. All edges gilt and within a slip-case of black leather over card for ease of carriage. Each has an owner's inscription "Eliza Smith February 23rd 1842" in ink on the front free end-paper. End-papers in cream. The contents are clean and very good for their age. A very nice example of early Victorian Anglicanism. UNCOMMON.

Before the half title page are four un-numbered card leaves, page [2] with an additional coloured and gilt frontispiece, and a similarly coloured architectural title page [3] with the legend - London. R.A.Suttaby at the lower end. Dark maroon morocco binding the foredges with protective brass onlays and working clasp, both upper and lower covers with a central recessed oval lozenge, the upper cover with INRI in ivory floriated letters, the lower cover with the same letters in blind, both covers with an outer single line fillet frame with flower heads in the corners. The spine with four raised bands, divided into panels by double fillet lines in blind, the title - Church Services , lettered directly in gilt. Marbled endpapers and gilt inner dentelles. Overall, a very attractive Book of Common Prayer in very good condition. This is a Suttaby binding, they were based in London and were very active during the mid to late nineteenth century, and renowned for their workmanship and elegant bindings especially pocket books and devotional literature. We have identified the Book of Common Prayer as Griffiths - 1861.2.

Full-Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Two decorative volumes bound in full leather with 4 raised bands to spine, all page edges gilt though dulled still glinting. Miniature prayer book (1834 ) and scripture lessons (1835) in the tiniest text all in double columns for which you will need your glasses . It never ceases to amaze me the the amount of craftsmanship that goes into these tiny treasures; with these its the lattice work patterns which have been made onto the leather covers. Previous owners inscription dated 1835 inside the Lessons ; otherwise both books clean and all pages tight within binding. Prayer book has some rubbing to spine edge.

Nonpareil 32mo, (130mm.), collates: [*]A-L16,M4; [*],A-H16, I14; [I15-16], K-U16,X8, A very nice copy in contemporary [?original] full brown morocco, gilt lettered direct: 'Church Services' on the backstrip, the backstrip in 5 compartments with raised bands, these outline tooled in black with the tooling extending onto the sides. with large brass corner pieces and clasps, all edges gilt, very lightly rubbed at the head and tail of the backstrip; presentation inscription on the front free endleaf: 'Ann W Simpson From her Affectionate Mama, July 3rd 1875. A nice copy of one of the Oxford press' gift editions of the required Anglican church services for use in church and in an easily portable size. With separate title-pages to the three parts but only the first carries the additional imprint of Suttaby and the publication date. Although this edition is unrecorded in Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer he does note that until 1870 the United Church of England and Ireland appeared on the title of editions of Common Prayer and from January 1871 the title of each new edition clearly distinguished its national church of origin. That this edition still reads as 'United Church.' one wonders if the title was from an existing setting with only the date changed.
