Cook and Ritchie note as well that the debate over representation between different parts of the state was "maintained with great spirit and perseverance" (pp. iii-iv). Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Full leather; brown calf with thin gold border. Maroon label on the spine says simply "Virginia Convention 1829-30." Some mild edgewear and weakness to the top half of the front hinge, but overall binding is good and strong. Text block tight. Overall very attractive. 919 pages. Some foxing here and there and a bit of that mild wrinkling that comes from age, but no damage other than age. Early ownership name on the front endpaper and again on the first page of the convention notes. Two folded sheets and a third strip of paper tucked inside the front cover provide a neat, handwritten Index to the volume, matching page numbers with the delegate speaking. The first owner, whose name is written twice inside and once on the front cover, was WIlliam Nelson Jr. The Nelson family in VA has a long history. One William Nelson served as Governor of VA in 1770-71. His son Thomas Nelson signed the Declaration of Independence. Another William Nelson Jr served as a judge in the General Court of VA. Yet another William Nelson Jr, (this one the grandson of Signer Thomas Nelson) lived from 1801-1849 and is buried at Grace Episcopal Cemetery in Yorktown along with several of his relatives. This is most likely the Nelson who was the owner of this book. John Marshall, James Madison, James Monroe and John Randolph all attended the Convention. Front board detached from the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities. Foxing present. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The Virginia Constitutional Convention of 18291830 was a constitutional convention for the state of Virginia, held in Richmond from October 5, 1829, to January 15, 1830. Almost immediately, the Constitution of 1776 was recognized as flawed both for its restriction of the suffrage by property requirements, and for its malapportionment favoring the smaller eastern counties. Between 1801 and 1813, petitioners called on the Assembly to initiate a constitutional convention ten times. The House of Delegates passed a bill twice, but the conservative eastern planter majority in the Virginia Senate killed both measures. Continuing growth in the western parts of the state led to another fifteen years of agitation. Several counties in the Eastern Shore, northern Piedmont and western counties began opening polls for direct expression from the voters for a constitutional convention; eventually there were twenty-eight such counties calling for reform. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…
