Einband leicht berieben. - My central statement is that, to hold our attention the more firmly, Aeschylus created certain problems, and wrought certain effects in spectacle, beyond ourfathoming. Specifically - and here I refer to my chapters - we wonder whether the eagles of an omen are the birds of prey in a simile, we wonder whether a Curse upon the House led to the sacrifice of Iphigeneia, we wonder that the murder robe of Agamemnon matches the cloth that was strewn before him, and we wonder that Clytemnestra shows a syndrome of sexual inversion. To put it differently: the dramatist heightened interest by using certain resources of language, and certain scenic conventions, as they had not been used before: namely, words that almost but not quite mean the same, annals that almost but not quite have a pattern, the wearing of elaborate costumes by the actors, and the playing of female parts by men.
