Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Birkenhead Priory and the Mersey Ferry' explores the rich historical intersection between monastic life and maritime infrastructure in North West England. Founded in the 12th century, Birkenhead Priory served as a vital spiritual and economic hub on the Wirral Peninsula. This comprehensive study examines the origins of the priory and its enduring legacy as the oldest standing building in Merseyside.Central to this narrative is the history of the Mersey Ferry, a service granted to the Benedictine monks by royal charter. The work details the logistical challenges, legal disputes, and economic significance of maintaining a reliable crossing between Birkenhead and Liverpool across the centuries. Readers will discover how the priory's influence shaped the development of local trade and transportation long before the industrial age.Through meticulous research into charters and local records, the author provides a vivid account of medieval monasticism and the evolution of one of the world's most famous ferry services. It is an essential resource for those interested in British local history, ecclesiastical architecture, and the maritime heritage of the River Mersey. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den Warenkorb20pp., 8vo. With eleven plates, one of them a double. Stitched and unbound. Grey paper front cover with title present, but lacking rear cover. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with stitching added to strengthen spine. Tastefully presented. Begins: 'As an architect resident in Birkenhead for nearly twenty years, I have naturally taken considerable interest in the one relic of antiquity in that most modern of English towns. What greater contrast can be found than between the picturesque ruins of the ancient Priory, dating back to the middle of the 12th century, and the large town surrounding it, in which nearly every building has been erected since 1820? A town of over 80,000 inhabitants has been built in less time than the monks of the Priory took to complete their home and church, to accommodate only sixteen people.' Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at Manchester University.
