First American edition of Ricardo's fundamental contribution to the science of economics, the copy of the American economist Theodore Sedgwick (1780-1839), with his ownership signature on the title page, as well as his pencilled sidelining and cross in the margins, including marking a passage which he cited in his conservative economics classic, Public and Private Economy. Sedgwick was known for his humanitarian views and Christian-influenced economics. He was an abolitionist and served as a Democrat member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1824 to 1831. His magnum opus Public and Private Economy was published between 1836 and 1839. On page 151 of the first volume of Public and Private Economy, Sedgwick utilized Ricardo's scarcity theory of value, citing pp. 1-2 of the Principles - these pages in this copy have his pencilled ticks and crosses. Ricardo is referenced again in the work in a critical vein - "If our people had at their tongues' end all that has been written by Say, Malthus, Ricardo, and all the other political economists of Europe, they would still know little of the economy of their own country" (ibid., p. 89). The fact the latter half of this copy is unopened indicates Sedgwick was not especially enamoured with Ricardo. Sedgwick has noted a purchase price of $2 on the front free endpaper, and his wife Susan Sedgwick (1788-1867) has signed her name under his ownership signature; Susan published various children's novels between 1829 and 1859. On the Principles of Political Economy was first published in London in 1817. It established a systematic and scientific approach to the discipline, and set forth both the labour theory of value and the theory of comparative advantage. The approach and methods influenced all succeeding generations of economists, and provided a foundation of arguments for free trade which endures today. Except for the 1830 reissue of this edition, this is the only 19th-century American appearance of any work by Ricardo. Against the advice of Jefferson, who thought the book too abstruse, Milligan printed 500 copies. Of these, 250 were subscribed by members of Congress and by others impressed with the notice in the Edinburgh Review in 1818. However as Jefferson warned, the remaining copies were largely unsold, and were reissued with a new title page in 1830. Despite the lacklustre sales Ricardo's influence in America was significant, spread mainly through the works of his disciples. Carpenter XXXVII (2); Goldsmiths' 22322; Kress C.401; Mattioli 3016; Printing and the Mind of Man 277 (UK edition); Sraffa 5b; not in Einaudi. Octavo. Uncut in contemporary boards. Housed in brown cloth solander box. With pencilled lines and ticks in the margins. Latter half of the book unopened. Some browning and foxing as usual, paper fault chip to sig. 49/2 not affecting text. A very good copy.

First edition of David Ricardoâ s most important work, a cornerstone of economic theoryâ " one of only 750 copies printed. Octavo, bound in three quarter leather over contemporary marbled boards, morocco spine labels. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. â David Ricardo is without doubt the greatest representative of classical political economy. He carried the work begun by Adam Smith to the farthest point possibleâ ¦ Ricardo, writing 50 years later than Smith, showed a greater insight into the working of the economic systemâ ¦ In the opinion of his own contemporaries at home and abroad, Ricardo was acknowledged the leader of the scienceâ ¦ His most important work is On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, first published in 1817â (Roll, History of Economic Thought, 155-6). Ricardo had made a fortune for himself on the London Stock Exchange by the age of 25. â He now began to interest himself in scientific and mathematical studies, but after reading The Wealth of Nations he decided to devote himself to political economyâ ¦ The fundamental groundwork of the Principles is based on the theory that, given free competition in trade, the exchange value of commodities will be determined by the amount of labor expended in productionâ ¦ [a thesis] which was given new force by the theory of distribution with which Ricardo reinforced itâ ¦ Ricardo was, in a sense, the first â scientificâ economistâ ¦ [His work] has proved of lasting valueâ (Printing and the Mind of Man 277).

First edition of Ricardo's fundamental contribution to economics, establishing a systematic and scientific approach to the discipline, and setting forth both the labour theory of value and the theory of comparative advantage. His approach and methods influenced all succeeding generations of economists and provided an enduring foundation of arguments for free trade. Ricardo's approach to political economy was informed by his friendships with Mill, Bentham, and Malthus, and particularly by his reading of Smith's Wealth of Nations in 1799. In 1815, Mill and others urged Ricardo to set out the Principles as a systematic account of his theories. The work outlines a newly developed labour theory of value, the theory of international comparative advantage, monetary theory, and the influence of taxation. Notably, Ricardo's emphasis on mathematical abstraction led him to develop the concept of the economic model: "Ricardo saw the study of economics as a pure science whose abstractions were capable of quasi-mathematical proof. his deductive methods have proved of great use in the elementary analysis of economic problems, and in the subjects which are capable of his rigid analysis, currency and banking, it has proved of lasting value" (PMM). His defence of free trade, based on the comparative advantage to both economies, has been enduring, with influence on the preference for free trade by Britain within the 19th century and on the free trade revival in neoliberal economics. Goldsmiths' 21734; Kress B.7029; Printing and the Mind of Man 277; Sraffa 4907(first state "his" misprinted as "hi" in the footnote on p. 330, second state with "in" correctly printed on the first line of p. 97). Octavo (209 x 128 mm). Contemporary half calf, later red morocco label, marbled sides. Joints and extremities neatly restored, light browning to endpapers and spotting to contents. An excellent copy.

VIII, 550 pp., 1 leaf publisher s advertisement. 8vo. Half calf with spine label, rebound by using old spine material. Inspired by Adam Smith s "The Wealth of Nations", David Ricardo (1772 1823) "decided to devote himself to political economy" (PMM). His present famous "Principles" first appeared in 1817 in 750 copies only. These copies today are quite unaffordable and even the present second edition printed in 1000 copies and published in the year when Ricardo was elected to Parliament, is of great value. Ricardo s "fundamental ground-work [.] is based on the theory that, given free competition in trade, the exchange value of commodities will be determined by the amount of labour expended in production [.] Ricardo also developed Adam Smith s theory of taxes [.] A tax is not always paid by those on whom it is levied; a correct taxation policy will always depend on a correct estimate of the indirect and ultimate effects of every form of tax" (PMM). Cf. PMM 277; Borst 1281. No half title. Inner hinge partly starting after first quire. Somewhat browned throughout. A fair copy in all.

Second edition, one of 1,000 copies, of Ricardo's fundamental contribution to the science of economics, following the first edition of 1817; very scarce uncut and preserving original boards. Ricardo is credited with the first systematic and scientific approach to economics; his exact mathematical approach and careful deductive methods provided a model for future texts in the field. Ricardo's interest in political economy was aroused in 1799 by a chance reading of Adam Smith. While he enjoyed cordial relations with Malthus, his economic views were decidedly anti-Malthusian. In 1815 he was urged by James Mill and others to set out a systematic account of his own theories. This led to the publication of the Principles, the result of little more than six months sustained work on his part. The "principal problem in political economy" as he defines it, is the "laws" which regulate "the natural course of rent, profits and wages" over time (preface). However, his book covered not only those laws but also a newly developed labour theory of value, the theory of international comparative advantage, monetary theory, the influence of taxation, and strictures on the writings of his predecessors and contemporaries. Carpenter XXXVII (2); Goldsmiths' 22322; Kress C.401; Mattioli 3016; Sraffa 5b; not in Einaudi. Octavo. Uncut in original boards, skilfully rebacked to contemporary style with green cloth, preserving printed paper label. Label somewhat soiled and rubbed, tips worn, some light foxing, a very good copy.

Third edition, first issue, and the last edition with Ricardo's amendments; with excellent provenance, coming from the library of the free-market Nobel Laureate George Stigler, with his bookplate loosely inserted. George Stigler (1911-1991) was, like Ricardo, a lifelong advocate of free market economics, and a leader of the Chicago School. In 1947, he co-founded, with Hayek, the Mont Pelerin Society, the intellectual vanguard of the neoliberal counter-revolution against encroaching government control, later serving as its president from 1976-78. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1982 "for his seminal studies of industrial structures, functioning of markets, and causes and effects of public regulation". George Stigler was gifted a stock of personalized bookplates in his lifetime, but did not use them; they were subsequently loosely inserted into his volumes by his family after his death. Also loosely inserted is a note in Stigler's hand noting he bought the volume in 1978 for 200 dollars. Stigler, as a neoclassical economist, was undeniably moulded by the thought of Ricardo, and his ownership of this volume is particularly compelling. Stigler published a study of the economist, "The Ricardian Theory of Value and Distribution" (Journal of Political Economy, vol. 60, no. 3, 1952), and references Ricardo and his thought many times in his other works. Yet he did criticize the economist, writing in his review of Sraffa's edition of Ricardo's collected works, "I think Ricardo's policy recommendations were profoundly good but his theory was not of the highest quality". Yet Stigler recognizes that Ricardo was a product of his time, an age "when an untutored genius could still remake economic science", and in such an age his thought, even if he did not hold it to be of the highest quality, nonetheless made a tremendous impact on the discipline; "one can indeed debate the desirability of the influence Ricardo exerted on economics, but his vast influence is undeniable" ("Sraffa's Ricardo", in the American Economic Review, vol. 43, no. 4, 1953). Ricardo's Principles was first published in 1817. It is his fundamental contribution to economics, establishing a systematic and scientific approach to the discipline, and setting forth both the labour theory of value and the theory of comparative advantage. His approach and methods influenced all succeeding generations of economists, and provided a foundation of arguments for free trade through to today. This edition contains significant corrections and additions, the most important being a new chapter on machinery which was highly relevant in light of the Industrial Revolution. According to Sraffa, 1,000 copies were printed, the final few with a stop-press change to the last line of text on page 521 altering "it is differently estimated by different persons" (as here) to "it is variously estimated by different persons". Carpenter XXXVII (5); Einaudi 4741; Goldsmiths' 23131; Kress C.769; Sraffa 5c. Octavo. Uncut in original boards, neatly rebacked with facsimile paper label. Extensive early pencilled notes to the front and rear free endpapers of page references, pencilled crosses in margins throughout. Light wear to board edges, some very light foxing, neat repair to short closed tear on terminal leaf; an excellent copy.
