Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The month of February has marked the celebration of Black History Month for more than half a century, an annual observance that recognizes and highlights the achievements and countless contributions of African-Americans. The yearly commemoration might not exist today if it were not for educator and historian, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, he devoted most of his life to shinning a light on the accomplishments of African-Americans throughout history. Known as the Father of Black History, Woodson was motivated by contemporary historians who had tendencies to conceal historical contributions made by African-Americans from the history books. Throughout reconstruction until the early 20th century, many historians had a narrow scope in their historical narrative and their perspective was very limited on African-American contributions to society. Woodson was fueled with a deep desire and determination to prove his predecessors wrong, he embarked on an educational journey to make the history of African-Americans both visible and appreciated. As a student of history, he was inspired by the stories he read over the years involving African-Americans who invented and accomplished things even while suffering extreme oppression. He published more than 20 books emphasizing the importance and power of the African-American story. Woodson was a true visionary, he did not let the obstacles and persecution he faced in his life stop him from becoming an esteemed groundbreaking writer and historian. In 1926, he established an annual celebration known as Negro History Week, a commemoration during the second week of February to coincide with and pay homage to the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, he credited the two with bringing an end to slavery in America. Negro History Week soon evolved into a monthly celebration in February known as Black History Month. The Federal Government officially recognized and began observing Black History Month in 1976 in conjunction with the Bicentennial Celebration.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition hard back binding in contemporary full leather covers, five raised bands, red and gilt title lettering label to the spine, blind tooling to the front and rear panels. 8vo. 8'' x 5''. Cookery book written by Eliza Smith which was first published in 1727 and ran through 18 editions by 1773. The first four editions were published under the byline "E S", but Smith did reveal she was a woman 'constantly employed in fashionable and noble Families for the Space of thirty Years and upwards'. The fifth edition of 1732 gave the author's name as 'E. Smith'. It was the first cookery book to be published in the Thirteen Colonies of America and was printed in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1742. It contained the first published recipe for 'katchup' which included mushrooms, anchovies and horseradish, it also appears to be the earliest source for bread and butter pudding. Contains lovely wood block engraved illustrated header to the preface, illustrated capital letter 'I', (xiv), wood block engraved illustrated header to page 1, illustrated capital letter 'T', 326 printed pages of text, small headers throughout, six plates which should be folding; however, the fold-out part of each plate is missing, 16 page index, colophon, (ii) publisher's printed books list. Front end papers absent, small piece of paper missing to the bottom corner of pages 35 and 291 just touching the text block, old pen notes to the rear paste down and end paper, dusty page edges, the odd early page with toning to the margins. Member of the P.B.F.A. FOOD [British Cookery].…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. First Edition. Evident first edition, this Dublin imprint was functionally published simultaneous with the London imprint (see Maclean, pages 23-24). Bound in contemporary full speckled calf; five raised bands, later gilt-tooled red morocco spine label. Spine rebacked with original laid-down and early repairs to edges, 6.5 x 4", 18mo. Near Fine with small patches of worming at front pastedown and bottom margins of the first twenty-five leaves; not affecting text; old hand notations on front pastedown, lacking rear endpaper; small chip to rear pastedown; contents clean and bright. An egalitarian cookery by a seemingly unknown London female cook, Susannah Carter (fl. 1765). A no fuss book of household management for the average 18th-century housewife. It seamlessly does away with extravagant spices and costly ingredients to make room for more homespun receipts at a time when cooking was arguably at its most decadent. Carter was one of the first culinary authors to incorporate month-to-month seasonal recipes to encourage at-home cooks to employ cost-effective ingredients they could access from their garden plots. So revolutionary was this cookery that American writer, Amelia Simmons, nearly copied word for word her receipts in her American Cookery published in 1796. "Mary Toldford Wilson acknowledged that many of the recipes in American Cookery 'were outright borrowings from British cookery books of the period, particularly Susannah Carter's.' Carter's work reworked the practice of home cooking with the use of simpler tools and step-by-step instructions. Her methods of preserving and drying were utilized and mimicked throughout the British Isles and American colonies. Her recipes still remain accessible even by today's standards. A scarce and comprehensive text that would forever modify the standard practice of cookery.…
