Unusual for nineteenth-century literature, it is not burdened by high moral didacticism or intimately drawn characters, but is instead focused on its Fantastic plot, set in the wild landscape of Cumberland and Westmorland, and interspersed with poetry. This second edition, published by her family to bring the little-known work to a wider audience, is also rare.
