Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The engineer and technical writer Frederick Walter Simms (1803-65) ranked as a leading authority on tunnel construction for railways. After working for a time at the Royal Observatory, Simms assisted Henry Robinson Palmer and later Sir William Cubitt on the South Eastern Railway. He was awarded the Telford medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1842 for his articles on tunnelling, and further employment on railways in England and France was followed by engineering consultancies to the East India Company and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. He gained greatest recognition, however, as the author of authoritative engineering textbooks, notably this work, first published in 1844. Considered the standard textbook on the subject at the time, it sets out the approved practices of the day, using the Bletchingley and Saltwood tunnels, whose construction Simms supervised, as key examples. A number of technical illustrations accompany the text.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, xi + [1] + 174pp, 12 plates (some folding out), mauve cloth, gilt title to spine. The contents in very good condition (some foxing and staining to the plates), the boards unevenly faded and a little scuffed & worn. The first edition of Simms' seminal work, a second edition followed in 1859 and later editions in 1877 and 1896. From 1836 to 1846 Simms was employed by the South Eastern Railway and was responsible for laying out its circuitous route through Kent and when work started on building the railway he was appointed engineer on the Bletchingley and Saltwood Tunnels, by which he gained much of that practical experience and knowledge, afterwards embodied in his Practical Tunnelling.

This is a strong copy of the third edition, revised and extended, with plates XX and XXI bound within the text, and I-XIX bound separately. Contemporary half leather very good, some scuffing to boards, a small puncture to spine of text volume; contents excellent, plates clean, folds strong. 1700 grams.
