Robert Bree, MD (17591839) English physician. Bree first published the above work in 1797. It reached a fifth edition in 1815, and was translated into several languages. "In this work," says Dr. Munk, the author "embodied the numerous experiments in his own case, gave a more full and complete view of asthma and dyspna than had hitherto appeared, and laid down some important therapeutic rules, the practical value of which has been universally acknowledged." Leather. Zustand: Good. A remarkable and very scarce early edition of this British physician's study of asthma and its causes, in which he uses his own experiences as a case study. The very scarce third edition of English physician Robert Bree's study of the respiratory system, first published in 1797.With chronic asthma requiring Bree to retire from his medical practice in 1793, he used his own medical condition as a case study for this work, with a particular emphasis on the psychological details of the disease, which he viewed as a symptom of other disorder's rather than an illness unto itself.This third edition is corrected and enlarged, with a lengthy appendix appearing to the rear.The most complete study of asthma that had ever appeared at the time of publication, Bree's study is remarkable for his view that attacks could be precipitated by a situation in which memory or emotion of a previous attack were recalled. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Rebacked, with the original spine laid down. Rubbing to joints, with boards holding firm. Bumping to board perimeters, with losses to leather and paper in these regions. Internally, firmly bound. Tide marks to tail of majority of leaves, with spotting throughout. Good. Library stamp on the half-title and lower corner of a few pages and an older faint stamp on title, faint dampstain in upper corner but mostly very faint, otherwise a very clean copy. Good modern half calf antique, spine gilt, red morocco label. A few marginal notes (cropped) in an early hand. FIRST EDITION. The most complete treatise on asthma that had yet appeared. Bree belongs to that select group of physicians who have written about their own condition; chronic asthma caused him to retire from practice in 1793, and he used his own case in this book. He studied the psychological factors of the disease, and ?showed that attacks could be precipitated by a current situation which by association of ideas and feelings revived not only the memory but also the emotional response which accompanied the first attack, even if the patient was unaware of this connection? (Hunter & Macalpine, Three Hundred Years of Psychiatry, pp. 554?556). Bree moved to Birmingham in 1796, and this copy belonged to the library of the hospital to which he was appointed as one of the four honorary physicians, a post from which he resigned on 18 March 1806. The first and second editions were both printed in Birmingham and are rare, much rarer than the later editions, which were published in London.…
