Kupfertaf., 2 Lederbände d. Zeit mit Rvg. First Edition. The exceptionally rare first separate book on surgery of the eye. Comprehensive and fully illustrated with approximately three hundred figures of instruments and operations, this is the first monograph in the world literature devoted exclusiveley to the surgery of the eye. It is especialliy noteworthy for its description of the earliest attempt to treat scarred corneas surgically. Guillaume Pellier de Quengsy's (1750/51-1835) method consisted of making an artifical cornea out of glas and substuiting it for the scarred cornea of the patient. The chrystal was supported by a silver ring and then sewen by direct suturing onto the patient's eye (1:pp.94-104 & plate 4). Only at the beginning of the nineteenth century did autotransplants and homotransplants begin to meet with varying degreees of success through the work of Reisinger, Stilling, Koenigshofer, Markus and other. Pellier is a good observer who recognizes the value of facts, a skilfull and decisive surgeon who even in difficult situtations will find the appropriate procedure and perform it".
