Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [4], 154, [2] pages. Maps. Illustrations (most with color). Research Pathways. Appendix I and II. Glossary. The National Climate Assessment (NCA) is a United States government interagency ongoing effort on climate change science conducted under the auspices of the Global Change Research Act of 1990. The NCA is a major product of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) which coordinates a team of experts and receives input from a Federal Advisory Committee. NCA research is integrated and summarized in the mandatory ongoing National Climate Assessment Reports. The reports are "extensively reviewed by the public and experts, including federal agencies and a panel of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1997, the U. S. Global Change Research Program initiated the First National Climate Assessment. This national-level assessment included analyses of the importance of climate variability and change for twenty regions around the United States, for five cross-cutting sectors, and for the United States as a whole. A thirteen-member National Assessment Synthesis Team (NAST) summarized and integrated the findings of the regional and sectoral studies, and drew conclusions about the importance of the consequences of climate change and variability for the United States. Both an Overview report (intended for decision makers and the public) and a Foundation report (intended for experts) were prepared and submitted to the President and Congress in November 2000.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - California's extraordinary ecological and economic diversity has brought it prosperity, pollution, and overpopulation. These factors and the state's national and international ties make California an essential test case for the impact of global climate change--temperature increases, water shortages, more ultraviolet radiation. The scientists in this forward-looking volume give their best estimates of what the future holds.Beginning with an overview by Joseph Knox, the book discusses the greenhouse effect, the latest climate modeling capabilities, the implications of climate change for water resources, agriculture, biological ecosystems, human behavior, and energy. The warning inherent in a scenario of unchecked population growth and energy use in California applies to residents of the entire planet. The sobering conclusions related here include recommendations for research that will help us all prepare for potential climate change.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Climate change represents one of the most alarming long-term threats to ecosystems the world over. This new collection of papers provides, for the first time, an overview of the potentially serious impact that climate change may have on tropical forests. The authors, a multi-disciplinary group of leading experts in climatology, forestry, ecology and conservation biology, present a state-of-knowledge snapshot of how tropical forests are likely to react to the changes being wrought on our planet's atmosphere and climate. Tropical forests represent extraordinary harbours for biological diversity, and yet as deforestation and degradation continue apace, they are under greater pressure from human impacts than ever before. Climate change adds yet another threat to these valuable ecosystems, and this volume demonstrates just how significant a problem this may really be. The authors identify certain types of forest, including tropical montane cloud forest that may be particularly vulnerable. They also show the strong likelihood of global warming aggravating problems in already fragmented forest areas.

Wraps. Presumed first edition/first printing. [10], 320, [6] p. Illustrations [some in color]. References Report of a Concerted Action of the Environment Programme of the Research Directorate General of the Commission of the European Communities. This is an assessment of impacts and adaptations to climate in Europe, based upon an expert review of current knowledge. It drew upon available knowledge, including the most up-to-date projects of likely future climate change. It was concluded that climate change has major implications for Europe's policies of development and environmental management. From an FAO press release: "The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has identified the Acacia pilot project, which has proven successful in combating desertification, for wider roll out. The Acacia Project has operated since 2004 and involves planting Acacia forests to combat desertification and provide socioeconomic benefits to local communities. The trees are improving soil quality, providing shelter for crops, creating fodder for livestock and producing gum Arabic to be sold on the international market. The project is being trialled in Senegal where the shock from the decline in the peanut market is being reduced through engagement in the gum Arabic sector. The pilot project has worked in 44 villages in Senegal and is underway in five other countries. FAO is seeking funding for wider implementation across the lands bordering the Sahara desert." Good. Front corner banged/turned a bit.

"Our climate is now changing at a rapid rate, and even greater climate change is very likely in the 21st century. Temperatures are projected to rise more rapidly in the next one hundred years than in the last 10, 000 years. This Assessment has involved thousands of Americans in an ongoing national dialogue about climate change and its impacts. The report identifies key climatic vulnerabilities of particular regions and sectors in the context of other changes in the nation's environment, resources, and economy. It also explores ways Americans can adapt to an uncertain and continuously changing climate" - Publisher's description. Minor rubbing. An ink mark to bottom page-edge. VG.
