Because of the high mortality rate of children, Victorian-era postmortem photography became a convention of memorializing them, often postmortem photographs of infants were the only images that existed of children. While now seemingly seen as somewhat morbid or grisly (and consequently many images were later destroyed, they were not considered as such at the time. Millville is adjacent to Vineland, New Jersey.
