Title-page, iii, [xi] (possible lacking a further page of current coins), xxxii, 357pp., 8pp. of a Report, 7 pages of advertisements, ix in the index and a further 1-page advertisement. Lacking the folding plan of Edinburgh and Leith. This is a scarce early Edinburgh directory that should be of interest to both local historians and genealogists. It comprises, among other information, a general and street directory; professions, trades and law directory; penny post town directory; parliamentary, public office and bank directory; postage and conveyance directory; insurance directory; etc. The book is bound in the original red-brown cloth with a paper title label on the spine. The book is in fair condition with several faults and is best regarded as being a reading and reference copy. The boards have shelf wear with some soiling and staining and the front board is only held in place by two strips of white cloth that a previous owner has glued to the top and bottom of the spine edge of the front endpapers. The corners and spine ends are bumped with a little damage and there is a split in the cloth of about 2 1/2" at the top and 1" at the bottom of the fore spine edge. There is a split of about 3/4" on the top of the rear spine edge. Most of the title label is missing. The contents are secure and clean apart from a few small stains and marks from finger smudges, etc., and some soiling on the title-page and contents pages. There is a strip of repair tape on the spine gutter between the back of the title-page and first contents page and a split down the spine gutter before the List of Streets resulting from the removal of the map. The front free endpaper and the title-page are noticeably creased and a name and address has been written on the top edge of the title-page. As mentioned above, the map is missing and this copy is best regarded as being a reading and reference copy.
