Paperback (No Dust Wrapper.). Zustand: Good. Condition Notes: A pleasant enough reading copy. Upper wrapper slighty curled with creasing to the corners. A somewhat scuffed and faded appearance overall. Text complete, clean and tight; Paperback; Measures 8¼" x 5¾" (0.3 kg); pp 160; Introductory chapters and glossary by Colin Elli…ott. Cover design and sketches by Peter Stuckey. "The Post Captain" is different and unique among sailing navy novels in being funny. It is almost certainly the only surviving contemporary humorous sea story of the Nelson period. It first made its appearance while England was still agog with the news of Trafalgar and Nelson not yet buried. || The book is on the shelf, ready to be appropriately packed, and posted from the pastoral paradise of Peasedown St. John, Bath, by a real bookseller in a real book shop - with my personal guarantee and beady eye on the Consumer Contracts Regulations. REMEMBER! Buying my copy means the book shop Jack Russells get their supper! My Book #150644 ||.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Post-Captain, Or, the Wooden Walls Well Manned' is a lively and satirical exploration of naval society and the distinctive manners of the British seafaring class during the age of sail. Written by John Davis, a writer with firsthand experience of the maritime world, the work offers a uni…que blend of humor, romance, and nautical realism. It provides a detailed view of life aboard a man-of-war, capturing the idiosyncratic language and social interactions of officers and sailors alike. The narrative centers on the adventures and romantic pursuits of naval officers, contrasting the rigors of life at sea with the expectations of polite society on land. Through its witty dialogue and vivid characterizations, the book serves as both an entertaining story and a historical document of the 'wooden walls' that defined an era of maritime dominance. Readers interested in naval history, maritime fiction, and 19th-century social satire will find 'The Post-Captain' an engaging and insightful look into the traditions and eccentricities of the Royal Navy. This classic work remains a significant contribution to nautical literature, prized for its authenticity and spirited portrayal of life on the high seas. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
