Paperback. Zustand: Good. This book was inspired by an event that took place one afternoon in 2017. This event changed the course of the lives of over 200 people in our community who were on a waiting list for housing and critical services. This list was erased, impersonally one day, by a directive. All of these people and many of their family members lost their plans and hopes for a better life, with no alternative offered. These were people who were homeless and fighting for a chance to get out of that state, permanently. Erasing that list heartlessly took away their dream. The bigger story is that thousands of people in this country are losing their chance to leave homelessness behind; losing their chance to become respected, contributing members of their community and to change the narrative for future generations. The homeless are the most underserved, undervalued citizens in this country. They are left out of all conversations regarding equal opportunity, the conversations that determine their future. As humans, they have value and potential in our communities, but their prospect for opportunity and contribution is stuck at the bottom of any measurable scale. As bad as it was already, over the last decade, due to policy changes at the federal level, the prospects of the homeless are sinking to an unprecedented low. Hope Disappearing explores the chain of events that has put this country and its homeless population in an untenable position. Drawing from the author's experience operating local homeless programs, this book details the growing social and financial burdens of sustained homelessness, both to individuals and society. Finally, this book explores ideas on how we can begin to approach these issues with resources that will once again create opportunities for all people and ultimately benefit our communities. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. "Part portrait of a place, part rescue manual, part rumination of life and death, Population: 485 is a beautiful meditation on the things that matter." -- Seattle Times Welcome to New Auburn, Wisconsin (population: 485) where the local vigilante is a farmer's wife armed with a pistol and a Bible, the most senior member of the volunteer fire department is a cross-eyed butcher with one kidney and two ex-wives (both of whom work at the only gas station in town), and the back roads are haunted by the ghosts of children and farmers. Michael Perry loves this place. He grew up here, and now--after a decade away--he has returned. Unable to polka or repair his own pickup, his farm-boy hands gone soft after years of writing, Perry figures the best way to regain his credibility is to join the volunteer fire department. Against a backdrop of fires and tangled wrecks, bar fights and smelt feeds, Population: 485 is a comic and sometimes heartbreaking true tale leavened with quieter meditations on an overlooked America.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Fifty essays on the state of population health from a vanguard voice in the field.Public health can rightly claim its share of victories: healthier cities, widespread sanitation, broader availability of nutrient-rich food, and reductions in violence and injury. But for all these gains, today we face a new set of challenges, ones complicated by political and professional shifts that threaten to fundamentally change the health of populations. Healthier is both an affirmation and an essential summary of the current challenges and opportunities for those working in and around the improvement of population health. The essays contained here champion an approach to health that is consequentialist and rooted in social justice - an expansion of traditional, quantitatively motivated public health that will both inform and inspire any reader from student to seasoned practitioner. Galea's cogent, incisive arguments guarantee that his perspective, currently at the forefront of public health, will soon become conventional wisdom.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Somewhere around 2050 the population of earth will begin to decline, and that decline will never stop. Some believe that fewer people will be an unmixed blessing. But we can already see the effects in Europe and parts of Asia: aging societies, stagnant economies, crippling demands on government services with too few workers available to care for all the old, sick people in their midst. But fewer workers will command higher wages; jobs will prompt innovation; the atmosphere will improve, the risk of famine will wane; there will be greater affluence and autonomy for women. But enormous disruption lies ahead.…

Hardback. Zustand: Fair. An award-winning journalist and leading international social researcher make the provocative argument that the global population will soon begin to decline, dramatically reshaping the social, political, and economic landscape For half a century, statisticians, pundits, and politicians have warned that a burgeoning population will soon overwhelm the earth's resources. But a growing number of experts are sounding a different alarm. Rather than continuing to increase exponentially, they argue, the global population is headed for a steep decline--and in many countries, that decline has already begun. In Empty Planet, John Ibbitson and Darrell Bricker find that a smaller global population will bring with it many benefits: fewer workers will command higher wages; the environment will improve; the risk of famine will wane; and falling birthrates in the developing world will bring greater affluence and autonomy for women. But enormous disruption lies ahead, too. We can already see the effects in Europe and parts of Asia, as aging populations and worker shortages weaken the economy and impose crippling demands on healthcare and social security. The United States and Canada are well-positioned to successfully navigate these coming demographic shifts--that is, unless growing isolationism leads us to close ourselves off just as openness becomes more critical to our survival than ever. Rigorously researched and deeply compelling, Empty Planet offers a vision of a future that we can no longer prevent--but one that we can shape, if we choose. Praise for Empty Planet An ambitious reimagining of our demographic future.--The New York Times Book Review The authors combine a mastery of social-science research with enough journalistic flair to convince fair-minded readers of a simple fact: Fertility is falling faster than most experts can readily explain, driven by persistent forces.--The Wall Street Journal The beauty of this book is that it links hard-to-grasp global trends to the easy to-understand individual choices being made all over the world today . . . a gripping narrative of a world on the cusp of profound change.--The New Statesman John Ibbitson and Darrell Bricker have written a sparkling and enlightening guide to the contemporary world of fertility as small family sizes and plunging rates of child-bearing go global.-The Globe and Mail.…
