Frontispiece and illustrated with 21 lovely water colours, wash drawings and decorative pen and ink sketches from the originals by Captain Martin. Pictorial dust jacket with white lettering. A little rubbing at the spine and closed invisible tear at the bottom of the spine junction and front wrap. Some light nicks to the top rear edge. Overall very good condition. Book is fine. The sojourn of one year (the fatal one), in which the French subjugated the Tahitians by bloody force and made the island a protectorate of France. Henry Byam Martin 1804-1865 died as a Vice-Admiral. The journal is an important contribution to the history of the Royal Navy in the Pacific. .From the original manuscript in the British Museum. Introduction, editing and notes are by Edward Dodd, with the assistance of Bengt and M.Th. Danielsson and P. Montillier.
