In den Warenkorb8vo (185 x 118mm), pp. lvi, 223; with a frontispiece and six plates; contemporary polished calf, spine gilt (a bit dry); marbled endpapers and edges. Second edition of this recension, edited by Stephen Jones (1763-1827): first published the previous year. Northup lists the several additions to this revision, among them literal translations of the poems of which The Descent of Odin and The Triumphs of Owen are imitations; and several minor poems which had previously been uncollected, such as Gray's epigram on the Rev. Henry Etough, and the political poem The Candidate, as well as several poems about or addressed to Gray. Northup says that there were large paper copies of this edition, and this may be one of them, as the margins are quite generous. Northup 85; NCBEL II 577 (a list compiled by Roger Lonsdale).

In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. 'xvix' [i.e. xxvi], [ii], 176, 169-176, 185-207; early polished calf, spine gilt, a little rubbed at joints. First edition by Gilbert Wakefield. Originally intended for the church, like his father, Wakefield (1756-1801) became a dissenter, and taught for some years at Warrington Academy. When that failed in 1783, he turned to literary subjects, and this was one of his first projects. The volume is prefaced by a new biography, and each of the major poems has substantial notes, tracing sometimes with unwarranted leaps of the imagination Gray's inspiration in classical or English literature, or suggesting better phrasing than Gray had managed. There are also comments on Johnson and Mason's observations on Gray's poetry. Northup 71.
