Xiv, 358 pp. Engraved title-page vignette, plus 3 copperplate engraved plates. Soundly bound in full polished calf; red morocco title label largely perished with only a trace remaining. Leather shows shallow chipping/loss at crown; corners lightly bumped. Contents sound, clean, and complete. Printer not identified on title page; possibly a pirated edition, though the presence of the engraved plates suggests otherwise. VG-.

Paperback. Zustand: Good Only. Not Stated (illustrator). A very scarce pocket-sized volume of moral instruction, written by Ann Fisher. A very scarce work from the Religious Tract society chap-book series. This work is number '7' as indicated by the '7' to the title page. 'The Pleasing Instructor' is a work in moral guidance, intended to offer short and quick moral lessons to those who read it. Illustrated throughout, including a plate to the rear wrap. Written by Ann Fisher, a grammarian who publisher 'A New Grammar' in 1745, which went through many editions and was very popular. She also wrote 'New English Tutor' and 'Spelling Dictionary'. Undated, dated using WorldCat entries, of which there are three entries. Collated according to worldcat entries, this copy also has fifteen pages and an illustrated woodcut to the rear. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, worn. Closed tear to the front wrap. Light marking to the wraps causing just a little discolouration. Rear wrap is lifting to the head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Good Only. book.

First American Edition. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 312 pages; "New Edition" on the title page; believed the 1st American edition of this pedagogical anthology which went through several editions in England. "Thoughts on education, by way of introduction." at front signed A. Fisher (Ann Fisher Slack). Period calf with partial leather title lable to spine. Front flyleaf has the top 1/3 clipped away presumably to remove ownership; a chip and closed tear to the bottom edge of the same leaf. Contents complete and decent with usual and expected general toning and occasional spotting. Leather crazed somewhat over the spine; some shallow gnawing to the front edge of the lower board. [Evans 29518; Sabin 63412] Uncommon early American imprint of this British pedagogical collection. Good thus.

Some light browning, rebound in modern speckled calf, gilt rule edged raised bands with gilt lettered title label to spine. This edition apparently not recorded by ESTC. It went to numerous editions and was pirated. The preface is signed A. Fisher, the compiler.At foot of p.iii of the preface: "A wretched piracy of this book being now in circulation, executed in the most paltry manner, . the public are requested to be cautious in purchasing only those printed for G.G. and J. Robinson, London, and S. Hodgson, Newcastle; and containing six copper plates .". US$186.
