Buxbaum studierte in Leipzig, Jena und Halle und begleitete nach dem Abfassen einer nach dem Rivinschen System angeordneten Flora von Halle (1721) den Grafen Romanzow auf seinen Gesandtschaftsposten in Konstantinopel und beschrieb als Ergebnis der Bereisung der Küstenländer des Schwarzen Meeres, Kleinasiens und Armeniens als erster die daselbst und in Sammlungen aufgefundenen Pflanzen.
