Erstausgabe
Finely bound collection of the works of Thomas Paine, including the rare first British editions of Common Sense and Plain Truth (London: J. Almon, 1776), second editions of Rights of Man Parts I & II (London: J.S. Jordan, 1791-1792), complete with half-titles present, and a rare early printing of John Quincy Adams' response to Paine's Rights of Man (London: J. Stockdale, 1793), attributed to his father John Adams and written when John Quincy Adams was 26 years old. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, red morocco spine label, all edges speckled black. In near fine condition. A rare and desirable collection. One of the founding fathers of the United States, Thomas Paine authored two of the most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, which ultimately inspired the 1776 Declaration of Independence. Virtually every American rebel read Paineâs powerful pamphlet Common Sense which crystallized the American Revolution and demand for independence from Britain. John Adams asserted "without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.".

[4],44pp. 8vo. Zustand: Later plain wrappers. First Dublin edition. First Dublin edition. [4],44pp. 8vo. A vigorous attack on Common Sense., written under the pseudonym of "Candidus," whose true identity is claimed by Thomas Adams to be James Chalmers, although Sabin attributes it to William Smith, and others to Charles Inglis. The preface, containing an appeal to John Dickinson, author of the celebrated Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, shows that Thomas Paine's authorship of Common Sense remained a mystery for some months after its initial publication. This is the first Dublin edition, reprinted from a Philadelphia edition. Chalmers (c.1734-1802) was born in Scotland; he first traveled to the West Indies before reaching American in 1760, and eventually became a wealthy planter in Maryland. Although not a particularly avid Loyalist, Chalmers became increasingly political as the Revolution progressed, both as a pamphleteer and as a soldier. Although he was offered a commission in the Continental Army, he decided to accept a commission as lieutenant colonel of the First Battalion of Maryland Loyalists instead, one of the only Loyalist regiments that was "regularly organized, officered, and paid." Adams, American Controversy 76-19d; ESTC N20262; Sabin 84642 (note).
