Very good in original light brown pressed ribbed cloth boards, minor discoloration at heel and @2" up the boards, with a few tiny spots. Yellow endpapers and text are in excellent condition. Signatures are slightly uneven. The inscription, on the first free, white endpaper reads: "Robt Davis from his friend T. Whittemore", with the date 1840 at the top corner in the same hand. Davis is possibly a descendent of the important early Universalist Isaac Davis family. 408 pages, with General and Author indexes. Whittemore was influential in nearly every aspect of the Universalist church tradition in America. He was an author, speaker, historian and publisher. He was the founding editor of The Trumpet and Universalist magazines, which succeeded the Universalist magazine of Hosea Ballou in 1828. Whittemore contributed to Universalist historiography by identifying precedents for Universalist beliefs in earlier Christianity, which is the main topic of his "Plan Guide to Universalism". He co-founded the Universalist Historical Society in 1834. These histories were influential in bringing many readers to regard the Christians of the first centuries as Universalists. This copy is an unique treasure of America's spiritual and religious heritage, enduring to the present day. Whittemore and Ballou held the radical view of ultra-universalism, believing that punishment in the afterlife did not exist and were opposed to universal restorationism, which claimed that it did.
