Folio, pp. [iv], 8; complete with half title; an exceptionally fine copy, in the original marbled wrappers (foredge of lower wrapper short, apparently originally in this state). Sole edition, and a presentation copy from Philips, inscribed on the half-title by an unidentified recipient, 'Sent me by the Author'. This elegy is the last of Philips's political tributes. William Cowper, Earl Cowper, had served with distinction as Lord Chancellor, and was one of the most widely admired politicians of his day. Both Chesterfield and Pope thought highly of his abilities as an orator. 'Beyond argument he was an upright man, with a sense of responsibility for the good of the state that transcended party allegiance or personal advantage' (ODNB). A lovely copy of an uncommon poem. Foxon P210.

Zustand: Gut. pp. 171-191. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Author's name underlined on cover, cover stained and lightly bumped, a few side annotations in text. - From the text: The present study had its origin in an attempt to understand the rhythmical pattern of Pindar s dactylo-epitrite odes. Dactylic rhythm is in 4-time (what Aristoxenus calls the [.] or 2:2 ratio) and trochaic or iambic is in 3-time (the [.] or 2:1 ratio), and when Greek lyric poetry appears to combine these rhythms it may be thought to be alternating between 4-time and 3-time, an alternation or [.] which ancient musicians would understand and to which they would respond without difficulty. It might seem to follow that a dactylo-epitrite ode offers alternation between 4-time (dactylic) and 7-time (epitrite), the 4:3 ratio. But here difficulties arise. It should first be noticed that Aristoxenus specifically rejects 7-time, the [.], and the 4:3 ratio, saying it is irrational and unrhythmic, though he does not deny, it seems, that epitrite feet occasionally occur (this is what he appears to say in a fragment quoted by Michael Psellus). Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 1-19. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to Jeff [Henderson]. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: At a crucial point in Pindar's celebrated fourth Pythian, Aphrodite gives Jason the iunx, an erotic charm that he will use to seduce Medea. Described as "a mad bird pinned to a four-spoked wheel," this iunx has occasioned much discussion and confusion. It is usually argued or assumed that a sympathetic "spinning" motion lies at the heart of the magical operation, and that the victims of such a magical device are to be similarly whirled about until they are so utterly confused and disoriented that they yield to the demands of the practitioner. - Wikipedia: Christopher A.
