In den WarenkorbLikely first illustrated edition of one of the most significant works of religious English literature. Small octavo, early half sheep over marbled boards, three frontispieces, illustrated with eleven nearly full-page woodcuts, publisher's error jump in page number from p. 324 to p. 343. In good condition with rubbing to the extremities and loss to the sheep binding, hand-printed paper label replacing spine label, small ownership tag to the front pastedown, some toning throughout, old tape repairs (versos of frontispiece and title page, page 12, page 83), closed tear to the front flyleaf, some loss to the first frontispiece woodcut which has been removed from the original frontispiece leaf and adhered on one of the front flyleaves with a border drawn in ink, likely an antiquarian repair. Rare and uncommon in trade and at auction. First published in 1678, John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress remains one of the most significant works of theological fiction in English literature, as well as one of the progenitors of the narrative aspect of Christian media. It has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. It appeared in Dutch in 1681, in German in 1703 and in Swedish in 1727. The first North American edition was issued in 1681. âBunyan wrote this book in Bedford Gaol, which may bring hope and consolation to some of the myriads of those imprisoned for conscienceâ sake since his day⦠the early demand for the book was not from the learned, but from the pious and the young. It was at first fashionable to sneer at Bunyan as a writer, but the approval of such as Swift, Johnson and Walpole marked a change. Now it is universally known and loved, and the parable of salvation is accepted by all denominationsâ (PMM 156). It has also been cited as the first novel written in English.…

In den WarenkorbFull Description: BUNYAN, John. The Pilgrim's Progress from this World, to that Which is to Come. Complete in Three Parts. Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream. To Which is added, The Life and Death of the Author. Embellished with Cuts. Part the First [-Thrid]. Wherein is discovered I. The Manner of his Setting Out. II. His Dangerous Journey, And III. His Safe Arrival at the Desired Country. Worcester: Isaiah Thomas, 1790-1791. First illustrated edition by Isaiah Thomas, and likely the first complete in three parts illustrated American edition. Twelvemo (6 3/4 x 4 inches; 172 x 105 mm). [2], 9-324, 345-404 pp. Bound without two preliminary leaves A3 and A4, but main text is complete. There is a jump in pagination after page 324, but collation is correct. With 14 engraved plates inclusive of a separate frontispiece for each part and eleven other engravings in the text. With a separate title-page for each part. Parts II and III are dated 1790, and Part I is dated 1791. We could only find two copies at auction on Rare Book Hub since 1933, one of which was defective. Full contemporary (?) calf. Boards and spine with some chipping and rubbing. Corners bumped. Previous owner's old ink note on blank recto of first frontispiece. A large tear to upper right corner of leaf U5, with some loss of text. Leaves S2 and W4 with large closed tears, touching text and crudely stitched closed, but with no loss. Signatures G and H with tearing to lower inner margin, generally not affecting text, but with loss to leaf H[2] obscuring a few words in margin. Paper is toned and brittle as usual from American paper of this time. Overall a very good copy of a rare edition. "Part 3, first issued at London in 1693, is an imitation of Bunyan's style by an anonymous author" (Evans) "Without apparent exception, cuts for The Pilgrim's Progress during this period [1790s] and for that matter, well into the 1820's- were imitative. Indeed, the lack of variety in the illustrations might be said to be a principal characteristic of the American editions of Pilgrim's Progress. Occasionally an American edition itself furnished the cuts for later printings, as was the case with Isaiah Thomas's many issues of Bunyan's work. Thus Thomas's Boston editions of 1794 and 1800, as well as the "first" Exeter edition of 1804, borrowed plates from the Worcester edition of 1790. ("Illustrations of American Editions of "The Pilgrim's Progress" to 1870." David E. Smith, Gillett G. Griffin.) The most well-known allegory ever written, this journey of the protagonist, Christian, is simultaneously filled with vivid and full human portraits of its characters. With over 100,000 copies sold in Bunyan's lifetime, this "most perfect and complex of fairy tales" succeeded in attracting audiences from every Christian sect. ESTC W18748. In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First American Edition. A fantastic collection of sixteen first editions, all signed by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez and all inscribed by him to the same recipient, Richard Mattie. A painstaking exercise in book collecting, undertaken by the resourceful Mattie over a period spanning from 1997 to 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had a close connection to the author by which the signatures were obtained. The collection is accompanied by a 1-inch thick folder, titled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005", in which he has meticulously documented this nearly decade-long collecting venture, preserving every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire and emails (printed out in full). A remarkable collection. All sixteen books are first American editions, with the exception of Vivir para cotarla which is the true first edition in Spanish, the Columbian edition published by Grupo Editorial Norma, Bogota, 2002. Most books are Fine in Fine unclipped dust jackets, with several exceptions: Strange Pilgrims has slight cloth discoloration at the base of the book; No One Writes to the Colonel has a partial name erasure top of the front free endpaper and some top edge foxing, else Near Fine in a bright first issue DJ with a minuscule closed tear bottom of front panel and a small scratch to the front spine joint else fine; One Hundred Years of Solitude is Very Good with light wear to extremities, soiling to cloth, a contemporary former owner inscription written in Spanish and dated 1970 at the top of the half-title page, in a Very Good first issue dust jacket with the exclamation mark at the end of "Latin America" on the front flap, with some old tape-reside to the blindside, shallow edge wear and rubbing; the dust jacket of Evil Hour is price-clipped; faint staining to rear cloth of Love in the Time of Cholera though still Near fine. The Limited Editions Club (LEC) of One Hundred Years of Solitude is inscribed in English, "To Richard, from his Friend," and is signed and dated 1998; notable as Garcia Marquez rarely inscribed in English. Additionally, Mattie reportedly said that Garcia Marquez commented that this was the first time he signed this book. Fine in a Near Fine slipcase, with glassine wrapper toned, wrinkled, edge worn, with several pieces of tape and three small circular labels at one spine end. Signed.…
