Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Unstated edition. (no dust jacket, as issued) [solid copy, moderate overall wear, hinges and binding fully intact, 1-1/2-inch rip in spine cloth at bottom front hinge, cloth frayed exposing boards at 3 of 4 corners; internally very clean, despite some very light dampstaining to the last 80 pages or so]. (B&W photographs, halftones, diagrams) This massive work, first issued in 1911 (as "A Cyclopedia of Motion Picture Work," in two volumes), is really a gigantic how-to manual, with a staggering amount of detailed information about exactly how films were manufactured, distributed and exhibited to the public in the nickelodeon era. Very technically- and mechanically-oriented, it's divided into the following major sections: The Optical Lantern; Motion Head; Photography; Motography; Motion Picture Theater; Electrical Principles. Although there are some interesting scene stills from films of the day, there is virtually nothing in this book about the actual individuals involved in bringing films to the screen (for that I would recommend Robert Grau's "The Theatre of Science," published the following year) -- but if you want to know about the operation and maintenance of any one of nearly a dozen different models of projectors then in use, or the details of working out a weekly budget for a "high-class store-front picture theater," or how a candy vendor might have been instructed to work the crowd between shows, this is the book for you! Note that this appears to be, essentially, a one-volume, updated edition of the 1911 "Cyclopedia" (the first part of the book is numbered through page 282, at which point (with the "Photography" section) the page number starts over again and finishes up at 297). It's described in the Introduction as "a compilation of many of the most valuable Instruction Papers of the American School of Correspondence, and the method adopted in its preparation is that which this School has developed and employed so successfully for many years.".
