Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-In the course of a furlough the author took in the year 1870 to the Madras sanatorium of Utacamand, in the Nilagiri Mountains, he heard much of an 'aboriginal race ' living in the neighbourhood; which, infanticidal and polyandrous, was said to be fast dying out. He had long been curious to understand the mysterious process by which, as appears inevitable, savage tribes melt away when forced into prolonged contact with a superior civilisation. But, ignorant of all the languages of South India, he should have relinquished attempt to study the Todas, had he not the great good fortune to make the acquaintance of the Reverend Friedrich Metz, of the Basel Missionary Society, who had spent upwards of twenty years in labours amongst the primitive tribes forming the inhabitants of the Nilagiris; and who, in addition to being skilled in several Dravidian dialects, was exceptionally practised in High Kanarese and Tamil. Above all, he was the only European able to speak the obscure Toda tongue. It was not only that his knowledge of Toda dialect was invaluable for minute and truthful investigation, but the personal respect in which he was held by the people, and the confidence they placed in his fidelity to them, obtained for us a more friendly welcome and complete exposure of their minds than would have been accorded had we been mere strangers. The book is the product of extensive study of this race to make it a worth readable. About the Author:-William E. Marshall was a noted author, translator and compiler. He is remembered for his outstanding contribution in history and literature. He is the author of books such as - The Todas; A Phrenologist Amongst The Todas, Or The Study Of A Primitive Tribe In South India. The Title 'A Phrenologist Amongst The Todas Or The Study Of A Primitive Tribe In South India History, Character, Customs, Religion Infanticide, Polyandry, Language written/authored/edited by William E. Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Todas are an ethnic Dravidian group living in the present-day state of Tamil Nadu. Toda communities serve as an important subject of study for understanding social anthropology. A Phrenologist Amongst the Todas is an anthropological study conducted during the British rule over large parts of South India, particularly the Madras State. The author covers major topics that are informative for anthropologists and sociologists, including historical origins, physiognomy, phrenology, geological surveys, demography, religion, and social norms. Additionally, it discusses social issues, funerary practices, and marriage customs, particularly polyandry, which was a key feature of Toda society. In den Warenkorb19 autotype plates. xx, 271pp. 8vo. "The Todas, a small tribe of Buffalo pastoralists living on the Nilgiri Hills in southern India, were already known to scholars through two remarkable ethnographies by Breeks and Marshall, both published in 1873, and both including some of the earliest field photography ever to illustrate an anthropological work." - E. Edwards (editor), Anthropology and Photography 1860--1920 p. 179 and fig. 114. The phtographs in the present work were made by the well-known firm of Bourne & Shepherd of Simla and Nicholas and Curths of Madras. There are 14 plates printed in carbon by the Autotype Fine Art Co. Two are credited to Bourne & Shepherd; the others unsigned. They are all strong images taken from life. Aside from their value as anthropological documents, they are interesting as photographs as they combine the exotic appeal of the primitive and beautiful Indians with the careful vision of the recording scientist. The author, William Marshall, was a Lieut. Col. of Her Majesty's Bengal Staff Corps. See also Martin Kemp's essay in Beauty of another order, photography in science p. 129 and pl. 82 - "a particularly effective illustration of how photography could serve the needs of phrenology and physiognomy as applied to racial types.". Original green cloth. Front inner hinge repaired. Very good 19 autotype plates. xx, 271pp. 8vo.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Marshall, an Indian Army officer, lived among the pastoral Toda people of the Nilgiri plateau while on furlough in 1870. British observers had wondered at their strange appearance and customs since the 1830s, variously identifying them as descendants of Jews, Arabs, Scythians, Druids, Romans, or even Polynesians; Marshall himself concluded that they were of Turanian origin with "much of the blameless Ethiopian about them" (p. 4). His study has been considered "a testament to the longevity of phrenology as an anthropometric science, but it received little credibility from its peers and Marshall was refused Government patronage for a second study" (Sutton, Other Landscapes: Colonialism and the Predicament of Authority in the Nineteenth Century, p. 161). The attractive plates were produced using the Autotype reproduction process, a form of halftone printing developed by the Autotype Fine Art Company, founded in 1868. There was another edition in the same year, issued by the same publisher under the title Travels amongst the Todas, the priority unknown. Octavo. Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 14 similar plates, 5 further plates, 4 line-drawings to the text. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine, blind panels to boards. Spine darkened, sides marked, surface-wear to corners, front inner hinge cracked at head, but holding, contents clean. A good copy. …
