First edition of this incisive statement of working class political economy in Jacksonian America. Working class unrest was potent in 1820s Philadelphia, where workers were particularly unhappy about the length of their day, set from sunrise to sunset. At its formation in 1828, the Philadelphia Workingmen's Party was the first labour-orientated political organization in the United States. Stephen Simpson (1789-1854), originally a bank clerk and political journalist, stood as the party's Congressional candidate for Philadelphia in the 1830 elections. When that bid failed, Simpson produced the Manual as a means of re-emphasizing his position, noting in the advertisement that "the profound dissertations of Say, and other writers bewildered in the fogs of Gothic institutions, have been made to give place to the elucidation of obvious principles, of practical utility or equitable application" (p.
