Zustand: Moyen. 1 vol. in-24 reliure de l'époque pleine basane mouchetée, s.n., s.l., 1789, [iii]-xxiv-114 pp. Ami intime de Franklin pendant la résidence de ce dernier en France, Jacques Barbeu Dubourg (1709-1779) publia les uvres de Franklin en 1772 et c'est en raison de leur étroite association que Franklin imprima su…r ses presses le Petit Code. Il s'agit ici de la troisième édition, après celles de 1774 et de 1782. L'ouvrage est largement inspiré des théories de Benjamin Franklin, auquel l'ouvrage est dédié. "Eloge de la famille et du mariage, du travail, de la tolérance. Défense du droit de propriété et de l'impôt foncier. Idées agrariennes sur la population et l'agriculture" (INED, 218 pour l'édition de 1782). Comme toujours, l'exemplaire est mal paginé en préface (les deux premiers ff. non paginés, puis vii-ix, verso blanc, ix et verso paginé xii, xv-xxiv), avec la suppression des feuillets a1 et b1 comme dans tous les autres exemplaires. La pagination passe également de 88 à [91] sans manque, comme il est normal. On observe en revanche l'absence de remarque en bas de la page xij, à la différence des exemplaires de la British Library et de l'Université de Lausanne (qui porte la remarque "Tables", suivi d'un feuillet blanc, absent dans notre exemplaire). Etat moyen (manques de cuir en dos, coins frottés, petits mq. en plat, bon état par ailleurs, ex-libris Marjou en garde) Langue: Français.

Final edition of this little collection of 102 maxims… and reflections forming a perfect abridged statement of the philosophy of the Enlightenment.'Both signatures a and b have had the first leaf of each cancelled; no located copy still has them present' (Echeverria & Wilkie). After the half-title and title the numbering of the prelims is: vii-ix, verso of ix an unnumbered blank page, ix again, verso numbered xii, xv-xxiv. This is a copy with a5r numbered ix (see Echeverria & Wilkie). The dedication is 'A Monsieur B.F. (i.e. Benjamin Franklin). The first edition was published in 1774 and a second one was printed in 1782 in Paris on the press of Benjamin Franklin. Livingston (19) writes: 'It was again printed in 1789, a close copy, typographically, of Franklin's Passy press edition, and this is the only edition recorded in the Catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale (1914).' According to Quérard (I, 175), this edition 'est plus complète que les autres', and he adds 'ce petit traité renferme beaucoup d'idées sur le commerce maritime.' On page 87 these lines on the USA: 'La Pensylvanie est le premier pays policé de l'univers où la tolérance réciproque de tous les cultes religieux ait été garantie par une loi authentique.'The pages 89-90 are omitted in the numbering, page (91)-end contains notes to the various maxims. Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg (1709-1779) was doctor, professor, journalist and businessman: he was Diderot's doctor untill Barbeu died, and he created various commercial companies with the aim to help the American revolutionaries. - Small tear in outer blank margin of the title-page and a few unobtrusive spots, verso title-page and recto last page with strengthened inner margin.

In den WarenkorbRelié. Très rare petit volume petit in-12 relié demi-basane (début XIX° (8,5 * 14,45), XXIV pages contenant, le faux titre, le titre, l'avis des éditeurs, une dédicace à Monsieur B.F. (Benjamin Franklin) sur 3 pages, une préface de deux pages, deux pages blanches puis la table jusqu'à la page XXIV, puis 114 pages numérotées qui…contiennent les 102 maximes et quelques notes sur celles-ci, (il manque dans tous les exemplaires connus les pages 89 et 90 entre la fin et les notes, c'est donc sans aucun doute une erreur de l'ouvrier typographe. La page 88 étant la fin du texte et la page 91 le début des notes, il ne semble rien manquer). Nous recopions ici l?avis qui place le livre dans son contexte: «L'auteur de ce livre l'avoit fait imprimer en 1782 pour en faire présent à ses amis. Assurément lorsqu'il en fit hommage à M. Franklin il ne prévoyoit pas qu'une révolution rapide le rendroit utile et même nécessaire à chaque citoyen. Il est du petit nombre de ces ouvrages qui, comme le Contrat social sont trop au-dessus de leur siècle pour être appréciés par la multitude. Nous nous hâtons de le donner au public parce que le temps de son triomphe est venu». Il a été imprimé une première édition en 1774. C?est ici la troisième. Les deux premières éditions on été imprimé sur les presses de Benjamin Franklin. Lequel entretient avec Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg un correspondance suivi et amicale dès 1767. Quérard (Volume I, page 175) nous indique que d?après lui cette édition est plus complète que les autres» et il ajoute «ce petit traité renferme beaucoup d'idées sur le commerce maritime. Éloge de la famille et du mariage, du travail, de la tolérance. Défense du droit de propriété et de l'impôt foncier. Idées agrariennes sur la population et l'agriculture»; une mouillure marqué à la page 113 et touchant de façon très peu marqué les pages précédentes à partir de la page 103, bon état.
