Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The magical Peter Pan comes to the night nursery of the Darling children, Wendy, John and Michael. He teaches them to fly, then takes them through the sky to Never-Never Land, where they find Red Indians, wolves, Mermaids and. Pirates. The leader of the pirates is the sinister Captain Hook. His hand was bitten off by a crocodile, who, as Captain Hook explains 'liked me arm so much that he has followed me ever since, licking his lips for the rest of me'. After lots of adventures, the story reaches its exciting climax as Peter, Wendy and the children do battle with Captain Hook and his band. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is the magical tale that first introduces Peter Pan, the little boy who never grows any older. He escapes his human form and flies to Kensington Gardens, where all his happy memories are, and meets the fairies, the thrushes, and Old Caw the crow. The fairies think he is too human to be allowed to stay in after Lock-out time, so he flies off to an island which divides the Gardens from the more grown-up Hyde Park - Peter's adventures, and how he eventually meets Mamie and the goat, are delightfully illustrated by Arthur Rackham. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Signed limited edition, NUMBER 3 OF 20 COPIES SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM ON EACH PLATE, WITH THE BOOK SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER AND ENGRAVER/PRINTER on the limitation page. Although the edition was limited to 100 copies, only about 20 were signed throughout by Rackham. Published to capitalise on the popularity of the stage production Peter and Wendy, it is the only suite of Rackham's plates to be issued in an oversize portfolio format, with 12 of the artist's personal favourites from Rackham's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens reproduced at their original size. Of Rackham's designs Barrie wrote, "I like best of all the Serpentine with the fairies, and the Peter in his night-gown sitting in the tree. Next I would [sic] the flying Peters, the fairies going to the ball (as in the 'tiff' and the fairy on cobweb) - the fairies sewing the leaves with their sense of fun (the gayest thing this) and your treatment of snow" (Ray 329). Barrie's comments may have influenced Rackham's selection, as this portfolio includes all the images he mentioned. Latimore & Haskell pp. 39-40; Riall, p. 113. Elephant folio. Original full vellum, titles to front board gilt, new cream silk ties. In a facsimile of the original box. With 12 tipped in and mounted and signed plates reproduced from the original artwork by Arthur Rackham. Moderate soiling to boards with some spotting, corners and ends of spine bumped, plates with slight wave to them. A very good copy.

Signed limited edition, number 335 of 500 copies signed by the illustrator. This was the first appearance of Peter Pan in the title of a book, and Rackham's outstanding illustrated edition is an acknowledged classic of the "Golden Age" of book illustration. The story of Peter Pan had its genesis in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird in which the central chapters tell of a child "who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old. and flew back to Kensington Gardens". Barrie developed this story into a play (first performed in 1904, but not published until 1928), this book of 1906 (the first to appear with the name of the character in the title) and, finally, the novel Peter and Wendy which was published in 1911. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was the most popular Christmas gift book for 1906, and was highly successful commercially. It was the second of Rackham's books to be published as both a trade and deluxe edition and, as noted by Fred Gettings, "its publication and quality was a sure sign that Rackham had arrived, and was now to remain as one of the leading illustrators in a wide field of book titles". Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, 1975, p. 112; Riall p. 74. Large quarto. Original white vellum, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with decoration in gilt, top edge gilt and others untrimmed, brown endpapers, later yellow ribbon ties. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise and slipcase. Front endpaper with map of Kensington Gardens and 50 colour plates mounted onto brown art paper protected by captioned tissue guards. Corners and edge of front cover slightly rubbed, minor foxing to lower right corner of front cover, some occasional internal foxing; a near-fine and bright copy.

London; Hodder & Stoughton. [1912]. Elephant folio; 539 x 500mm, publisher's half cream vellum over light sage green grained cloth boards, upper cover lettered gilt, with string ribbon ties to spine and with the original cream satin fore-edge ties unusually intact (if lightly stained), the book housed in the original publisher's box which is decoratively lettered to lid (box worn and soiled, with loss and subsequent clever restoration); pp. [4], including engraved title-page and limitation leaf, and 12 large and stunning proof-size coloured plates presented in original mounts, with descriptive tissue-guards; a very good example of this prized portfolio, with light rubbing and flecking to upper cover, internally very fresh and clean throughout with fine plates and some careful restoration, and repair, to a couple of mount stubs at inner gutter; very scarce, especially in the box. First edition; one of only 500 numbered copies, signed by the publisher and the engraver/printer, out of a total limitation of 600 copies. 100 copies of that number were issued bound in full vellum, with a handful, apparently, signed by Rackham on the mount. A portfolio edition of this work was also issued in the United States, but two years later, but the U.K. edition is the more desirable. The proof-sized plates showcased here were, reportedly, selected by Rackham himself as his favourites. They are greatly enlarged versions of those in the published book and represent the largest Rackham plates ever printed. They are truly impressive.

Erstausgabe
First trade edition, first printing. Original russet cloth with gilt titles to the spine and upper board, along with a gilt illustration. Illustrated with 50 tipped in colour plates by Arthur Rackham. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some bumping and minor fraying at the spine tips and rubbing to the spine edges. The cloth and gilt remains bright. The contents, with a small contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper, heavily spotted to the half title, much less so to the remaining prelims and infrequently to the text page margins, are otherwise clean and bright throughout. All 50 plates, together with their captioned tissue guards, are present as called for and in fine condition without corner creases or marks. Peter Pan first appeared in the chapters 13 to 18 of J. M. Barrie's 1902 novel "The Little White Bird". Barrie extracted the story and following the success of his Rip Van Winkle illustrations (1905), asked Arthur Rackham to provide the illustrations. The resulting first edition of Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens became not only a highlight of golden age book illustration, but for many, their first introduction to "the boy who wouldn't grow up". Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
