Carter (1925-2015) is regarded as one of the most important female archaeologists of the early 20th century, working at some of the greatest excavations in the Middle East, Mediterranean, and North Africa. She joined the University of Pennsylvania Museum in 1950, became Director of the American School of Oriental Research in Baghdad in 1965, then joined Johns Hopkins University Department of Near Eastern Studies in 1970. Covers very good with small circular stain to the front and small nicks at the edges. Interiors near fine, lightly tanned with small neat contemporary dated Harbour Master ink stamp and rusted staple residue offset from the Supplement where it was laid inside the front. The text includes descriptions of settlements and economic activities. Among the views are the forts at Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Doha; the towns and villages of Suwaiq, Sohar, Ajman, Kalhat, Ghalla, Kuhistak, Ayanat, Ganaweh including Anglo-Persian Oil Company installations, Muharraq, Manama, and other sites on the approach to Bahrain Harbour; several islands and stretches of coast; and the Shatt al Arab Control Vessel.
