Hardback. Zustand: Fair. Another delightful installment in the delightful, internationally acclaimed series featuring Chief of Police Bruno: Bruno Courr ges is thrilled when he receives an invitation to the lavish birthday celebration of his childhood hero, World War II flying ace Marco the Patriarch Desaix. But when the party ends in the death of one of Marco's longtime friends, Gilbert, it turns into another day on the job for St. Denis's chief of police. All signs point to a tragic accident, but Bruno isn't so sure, for there is more to the Desaix family's lives and loyalties than meets the eye. There's Victor, the Patriarch's son and Gilbert's sometimes rival, and Victor's seductive wife, Madeleine, whose roving eye intrigues Bruno even more than her fierce political ambitions. Not to mention the Patriarch himself--did his postwar Soviet ties intersect too closely with Gilbert's career in Cold War intelligence? As Bruno's entanglement with the Desaix family becomes more complicated, his inquiries into Gilbert's life will become a deadly threat to his own.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. 2013 Pulitzer Prize FinalistNew York Times Ten Best Books of 2012 Riveting. The Patriarch is a book hard to put down. - Christopher Buckley, The New York Times Book Review In this magisterial new work The Patriarch, the celebrated historian David Nasaw tells the full story of Joseph P. Kennedy, the founder of the twentieth century's most famous political dynasty. Nasaw--the only biographer granted unrestricted access to the Joseph P. Kennedy papers in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library--tracks Kennedy's astonishing passage from East Boston outsider to supreme Washington insider. Kennedy's seemingly limitless ambition drove his career to the pinnacles of success as a banker, World War I shipyard manager, Hollywood studio head, broker, Wall Street operator, New Deal presidential adviser, and founding chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. His astounding fall from grace into ignominy did not come until the years leading up to and following America's entry into the Second World War, when the antiwar position he took as the first Irish American ambassador to London made him the subject of White House ire and popular distaste. The Patriarch is a story not only of one of the twentieth century's wealthiest and most powerful Americans, but also of the family he raised and the children who completed the journey he had begun. Of the many roles Kennedy held, that of father was most dear to him. The tragedies that befell his family marked his final years with unspeakable suffering. The Patriarch looks beyond the popularly held portrait of Kennedy to answer the many questions about his life, times, and legacy that have continued to haunt the historical record. Was Joseph P. Kennedy an appeaser and isolationist, an anti-Semite and a Nazi sympathizer, a stock swindler, a bootlegger, and a colleague of mobsters? What was the nature of his relationship with his wife, Rose? Why did he have his daughter Rosemary lobotomized? Why did he oppose the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the Korean War, and American assistance to the French in Vietnam? What was his relationship to J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI? Did he push his second son into politics and then buy his elections for him? In this pioneering biography, Nasaw draws on never-before-published materials from archives on three continents and interviews with Kennedy family members and friends to tell the life story of a man who participated in the major events of his times: the booms and busts, the Depression and the New Deal, two world wars and a cold war, and the birth of the New Frontier. In studying Kennedy's life, we relive with him the history of the American Century.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Focusing for the first time on why attorney general Robert F. Kennedy wasn?t killed in 1963 instead of on why President John F. Kennedy was, Mark Shaw offers a stunning and provocative assassination theory that leads directly to the family patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy.Mining fresh information and more than forty new interviews, Shaw weaves a spellbinding narrative involving Mafia don Carlos Marcello; Jack Ruby (Lee Harvey Oswald?s killer); Ruby?s attorney, Melvin Belli; and, ultimately, the Kennedy brothers and their father.Shaw addresses these tantalizing questions:Why, shortly after his brother?s death, did a grief-stricken RFK tell a colleague, ?I thought they would get one of us . . . I thought it would be me??Why was Belli, an attorney with almost no defense experience (but proven ties to the Mafia), chosen as Jack Ruby?s attorney? How does Belli?s Mafia connection call into question his legal strategy, which ultimately led to the Ruby?s first-degree murder conviction and death sentence? What was Joseph Kennedy?s relationship to organized crime? And how was his insistence that JFK appoint RFK as attorney general tantamount to signing the president?s death warrant? For fifty years, Shaw maintains, researchers investigating the president?s murder in Dallas have been looking at the wrong motives and actors. The Poison Patriarch offers a shocking reassessment?one that is sure to alter the course of future assassination debates. …

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. A reinterpretation of Egyptian and biblical history that shows the Patriarch Joseph and Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV, to be the same person - Uses detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place Exodus in the time of Ramses I - Sheds new light on the mysterious and sudden rise of monotheism under Yuya's daughter, Queen Tiye, and her son Akhnaten When Joseph revealed his identity to his kinsmen who had sold him into slavery, he told them that God had made him a father to Pharaoh. Throughout the long history of ancient Egypt, only one man is known to have been given the title a father to Pharaoh--Yuya, a vizier of the eighteenth dynasty king Tuthmosis IV. Yuya has long intrigued Egyptologists because he was buried in the Valley of Kings even though he was not a member of the Royal House. His extraordinarily well-preserved mummy has a strong Semitic appearance, which suggests he was not of Egyptian blood, and many aspects of his burial have been shown to be contrary to Egyptian custom. As The Hebrew Pharohs of Egypt shows, the idea that Joseph and Yuya may be one and the same person sheds a whole new light on the sudden rise of monotheism in Egypt, spearheaded by Queen Tiye and her son Akhnaten. It would clearly explain the deliberate obliteration of references to the heretic king and his successors by the last eighteenth dynasty pharaoh, Horemheb, whom the author believes was the oppressor king in the Book of Exodus. The author also draws on a wealth of detailed evidence from Egyptian, biblical, and Koranic sources to place the time of the departure of the Hebrews from Egypt during the short reign of Ramses I, the first king of the nineteenth dynasty.…
