Enriquez was an Assistant Recruiting Staff Officer among the Pathans during the time that he wrote the present work. "The absence of any work dealing consecutively with that part of the Indian Frontier described in the following pages, has encouraged me to arrange and publish the notes which I have collected during three years" (Preface to first edition). First published in 1910, Enriquez made considerable additions to the book for this second edition.…

First edition, a notably bright copy of this elusive book, based on notes made during the three years that Enriquez, assistant recruiting officer for Pathans, was stationed on the North-West Frontier. In his preface he remarks on "the absence of any work dealing consecutively" with the Pathan borderland. Born in India, Enriquez (1884-1969) followed his father, Colonel Albert Dallas Enriquez, into the Indian Army in 1905, serving with the 21st Punjabis in Northern India and with the Kachin Rifles in Burma, where he was first posted in 1913, retiring there in 1928. He escaped to Delhi following the Japanese invasion of Burma in 1941-2, re-enlisted in the army and became Assistant Commander of Mandalay Military Police. He has been described as exemplifying a class of "concerned, well-informed, amateur academic" who wrote about the hinterland of empire (Sadan, p. 67).
