Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: good. E. Horace Akin (illustrator). Presumed First Edition/First Printing. 343 pages. Illus., footnotes, bibliography, index, DJ in plastic sleeve, number in red ink on fore-edge, top, & bottom edges & fr endpaper. Some soiling to DJ, small tears to top DJ edge. Inscribed and signed by the author ("Chris"). Foreword by Martin L. Crimmins. Martin Crimmins (1876-1955) studied at the University of Virginia Medical School; shortly before graduation he joined the Rough Riders in San Antonio with the help of Theodore Roosevelt, a family friend. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he received his final rank of colonel in 1921, and saw service with Pershing in Mexico. As a herpetologist, he did pioneer work in the field of snake-bite treatment. He inoculated himself with serum until he became immune and then gave blood transfusions to snake-bite victims. Crimmins devoted his later years to writing, mostly on historical subjects. The author, Chris Emmett, was on the faculty of New Mexico Highlands University; he knew Crimmins for many years, and had access to his papers in preparing this biography. The illustrator, E. Horace Akin, was a descendant of Stephan Austin.
