Erstausgabe
FIRST. Good. Faded brown cloth boards - blind embossed covers, gold title on spine. A US Civil war post-hostilities memento with important California connection to short lived Camp Caston ( so named only from Jan 1866-Apr 1867; re-identified as Ft Caston in May 1867). The book is from that military library, being book #78. This copy was also shelved/read at Fort Barry Calif headquarters, and Benicia Barracks (Point Benicia, Sausalito, Marin Cty). || In the aftermath of the American Civial war this series of 3 books (here being Vol 2) is remembered as: " a collection of humorous "letters" written by a fictional character to a relation in the north during the Civil War. They were published regularly in the New York Mercury Sunday newspaper for the four years of the war. In the letters, Newell poked fun at northern generals, politicians, and had hard things to say about southerners. Although Newell was rarely serious, . the letters reflected the bitterness and frustration of many northerners at the time." A USA Civil War memento with special & unique US military/ California connections. [B234].
