ACCOMPANIED BY HER YOUNG GIRL KAMURO [MAID] . * A classic Kaigetsudo style portrait print of a popular prostitute with her young girl attendant maid. . The courtesan holds a very long Kiseru [smoking pipe] while gazing at the sparrow in the upper left of corner of the print. . She wears a stunningly beautiful silk Kimono brocade with her Obi [belt] tied in front, typical of prostitutes. This position of her Obi shows her willingness to quickly & easily disrobe from her Kimono and be available for amorous endeavors with her favorite client. . She is attended by her young novice, and apprentice, her Kamuro [maid] who is also wearing an elaborate silk Kimono with stripe decorations. She holds a small poem paper in her right hand, She too gazes at the bird in the corner. . *** THE ARTIST KAIGETSUDO ANDO SCHOOL OF THE 18TH CENTURY: . A school of painters and printmakers working in the Ukiyo-e style, specializing in large scale paintings and prints of courtesans during the first half of the 18th century. . As usual this print is unsigned. It is generally assumed that Ando was the founder of this school and that his style was closely copied by a small group of artists all using the name "Kaigetsudo" in their signatures. . This is a nostalgic Meiji period [1867-1912] reprint of an 18th century original. "These prints stand out as bold memorials to Japanese womanhood by 'cultivated' men of the period." Oban color woodblock print, 26.6 x 39.8 cm., excellent example,with crushed mica dust in background, verso with 'Adachi' seal, fine impression and registry, in extra-large size, a brilliant work. * RARE * . *** **** *** . . . A STUNNING VIEW OF AN ORIAN COURTESAN [OR PROSTITUTE] . . . WITH HER YOUNG KAMURO [HAND-MAID] . * This is a spectacular reprint, a view of an Edo period Oiran [prostitute] and her young Kamuro [hand-maid]. . The print has a very rare crush mica background, a technique seldom used because of the major difficulty in getting it to stick. The background also has several vertical gauffrage lines indicating Shoji [screen] background. . This color woodblock print is larger than the standard Oban size, an unusual example, in the best condition. . *** THE ARTIST: KITAGAWA UTAMARO: [c.?1753-31 October 1806]: He was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of the Ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints, especially for his portraits of beautiful women, or Bijin-ga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. . Utamaro's work reached Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, where it was very popular, enjoying particular acclaim in France. He influenced the European Impressionists, particularly with his use of partial views and his emphasis on light and shade, which they imitated. The reference to the "Japanese influence" among these artists often refers to the work of Utamaro. . *** THE CARVER/PRINTER: This print was expertly carved by Harada Kame and superbly printed by Ito Satoshi. This reprint is of a Kansei 3rd year [1791] -Bunka 1st [1804] year original. . *** CONDITION: This print is in stunning condition, with superb impression and impression, the colors are pastels, no fading, or other issues. SUPERB BRUSH-WORK THE THE OLD MASTER EISHIN CHOEN-SAI . * Excellent portrait of a high-class Bijin [beauty], Oriran [courtesan or prostitute] with her shy Kamuro [young maid] attendant. She hides behind her mistress, being shy about the artist painting them. . This kind of Bijin was common throughout the "Gay Quarters" or the Yoshiwara [prostitution quarters] in the "Shin Yoshiwara area. . This is a classic style Kaigetsudo portrait of a popular prostitute showing her in all her glorious silk Kimono dress. She is of the highest class. . This print has superb impression and registry. There are two tiny scuffs with a bit of color loss of the lower part of her Kimono, see cover.jpg, title.jpg, with a very clean front surface There are three reinforced & mended corners from the back side. A feint hint of very mild bent corners, not a major issue, barely noticeable. . This print appears to have been extracted from a book, where it was gently attached at the top back edge. There remains some paper from that book. . Nevertheless the overall impression is very good, ready for matting, framing and display. . Seldom found a RARE and obscure example. . *** REFERENCE: . Large Kawara Ban [broadside] woodblock print, sheet size ca.38 x 35 cm.,print size:43.5 x 30 cm.,re-backed contemporary, a few tiny old worm holes mended, a bit dusty, else firm & solid, advert. * * OBSCURE EPHEMERAL EXAMPLE * * . *** **** *** . . AN EARLY, OBSCURE EPHEMERAL ADVERTISEMENT FOR . . . GEISHA AND ORIAN MUSICIANS . *** This is a fascinating and early Kawara Ban [broadside] advertisement, woodblock printed. . It shows eight Geisha or Orian women, dancing, singing, playing the Shamisen, drums and entertaining. They are in a procession Ycalled OMEIRI KITSUNE SUGATA [A costume procession resembling a wedding procession of foxes]. . In the upper right corner is a portable shrine with Torii gate and two Bonsai pine trees, and three bundles of dried rice stalks, an offering to the gods of plenty. . This musical was performed at Sakai Machi, the local Geisha house. . The title is partially unread due to the 'running grass' style of calligraphy. The print is dated in the right margin: Tenpo 8th year [1837]. . *** RARITY: This kind of early illustrated advertisement for a Geisha house are seldom if ever found. . This kind of ephemeral advert was tacked up to walls, posts and public places with the intent they would be lost to wind, rain, snow and the attrition rate with a week or so. Necessarily they were cheaply printed using cheap techniques at a low cost. . This one survived in a book of the period with several other contemporary adverts protected and preserved. . The front side is a bit dusty, with re-backing which mended a few paper flaws and a couple small old worm holes. The print is solid and firm. . The print has a mild center fold, it is a 'double-Oban size. When folded down it is ca. 24 x 35 cm. . This print seems to have survived some sultry humid weather, there is some minor rubbing to last Kanji of title, and some scuffing to the surface, nevertheless the print is still preserved, RARE and solid. . *.
Shin Machi 1846.Large Kawara Ban [broadside] color woodblock print, ca.48.5 x 35 cm., contemporary old re-backing mending several small old worm holes,now firm & solid, surface a bit rubbed & dusty, else good impression.* * OBSCURE EXAMPLE * * . *** **** *** . . SHIN MACHI PROGRAM . . . GEISHA AND ORIAN PERFORMING AN HISTORICAL PROCESSION . . . IN 'SHIN-MACHI' [NEW TOWN YOKOHAMA] . * Part of the title is un-read. The balance says "SHIN MACHI x BANZUKE: PROCESSION OF COURTESANS DRESSED AS HISTORICAL FIGURES IN A PLAY, in "Shin Machi" [New Town] most likely Yokohama entertainment or prostitution or "Gay" quarters. . The print illustrates color 20 women participants many are either Geisha or Orian [is a collective term for the highest-ranking courtesans in Japanese history, who were considered to be above common prostitutes, known as Yujo.] . Performers include musicians, drummers, flute player, Shamisen & Koto players, singers & dancers. . Each is elaborately clothed in silk Kimono. There are three men participants, one a Samurai with his sword and two Betto" or equestrian page, one sports a long sword on his shoulder. In all, 23 people participate in the procession. . Because part of the title is un-read we cannot know the exact and full meaning of the title. Each participant has a caption identifying their 'role' in the performance. . *** A RARE ADVERTISEMENT POSTER: . This is a RARE and early advertisement for the a celebration and festival, running in Kyoka 3rd. year [1846], on several June days, with dates of activities. . This woodblock print is printed in six colors: blue, pink, yellow, green, brown and black. . Print size is 45 x 33 cm., a "double-Oban." It folds down to ca. 14.5 x 35 cm., full sheet is ca. 48.5 x 35 cm. The print is mildly center folded. . *** RARE & OBSCURE EXAMPLE: . This kind of ephemeral Kawara Ban poster advertisement was commonly displayed in public places. It was tacked to walls, posts, around shrines, and at the entrance gate of the "Gay" quarters. . It was not mean to last, it was subject to the whims of nature's wind, rain & snow, the attrition rate left almost none surviving. . This example was preserved in a book containing several other period original advertising posters. . This example is in very good, gently used condition. This has no pin holes from where it was usually tacked up for display. . This one was more than likely preserved by some contemporary collector. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: . The print has contemporary re-backing, which mended some old usual worm holes, with minor loss. Overall the print is now stable, firm and solid. . There is some of the usual surface rubbing, dustiness and signs of wear. The images are strong, good color no fading, registry of color is a bit off in some places. The verso is blank as issued. . By and large a very good example of a RARE and early advertisement, seldom found. . *.
