In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The essays which Bentham collected together for publication in 1830 under the title of Official Aptitude Maximized; Expense Minimized, written at various times between 1810 and 1830, deal with the means of achieving efficient and economical government. In considering a wide range of themes in the fields of constitutional law, public finance, and legal reform, Bentham places the problem of official corruption at the centre of his analysis. He contrasts his own recommendations for good administration, which he had fully developed in his magisterial Constitutional Code, with the severe deficiencies he saw in English practice. The core of the volume consists of four major essays directed against the principles and policies of four leading statesmen: Edmund Burke, George Rose, Robert Peel, and Lord Chancellor Eldon. Of particular concern to Bentham were the abuses sanctioned by the judges and their officials in the Westminster Hall courts, which, he argues, resulted in the denial of justice to the majority of the population. In this volume, Bentham not only displays the precise logical reasoning for which he is well known, but also his considerable skills as a rhetorician of reform.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this collection of papers. The preface states that the reason for publishing these different papers under the same general title is that they belong to one and the same design and, it is believed, aim at one and the same result. The work from which they take their common origin was an all-embracing system of proposed Constitutional Law, for the use of all nations professing liberal opinion. "In acknowledging a presentation copy of Official Aptitude Maximized, Sir James Graham (1792-1861) wrote to Bentham: 'Permit me to offer my sincere thanks for the present of your valuable work, which I shall study with the respect due to the production of the most enlightened and honest jurist, every mark of whose approbation is regarded by me as an honourable distinction.' It was in this same year that Graham brought forward his memorable motion for the reduction of official salaries" (Atkinson, p. 194f). The papers are as follows: I. Preface. II. Introductory view. III. Extract from the proposed Constitutional Code, entitled Official Aptitude Maximized, Expense Minimized. London: 1816. IV. [drop-head title:] Further Extract from proposed Constitutional Code. V. Defence of Economy against the Right Honorable Edmund Burke. First printed in January 1817. VI. Defence of Economy against the Right Honourable George Rose. First printed in September 1817. VII. Observations on Mr. Secretary Peel's House of Commons speech. III. Indications respecting Lord Eldon. IX. [drop-head title:] On the Militia. [imprint:] London, C.& W. Reynell, [n. d.]. X. [drop-head title:] On Public Account Keeping. Chuo O6.1; Everett, p. 540; Goldsmiths' 26063. Eleven papers bound in a single vol., octavo (211 x 125 mm). Contemporary blue straight grained morocco, gilt double-rule border to covers, spine ruled gilt in compartments, red morocco labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Joints skilfully repaired. Bound without the directions to the binder leaf in paper I, the half-title to paper III, the final blank to papers I, VII and VIII, the initial and final blanks and the penultimate leaf with printer's imprint leaf to paper IX.
