Bertram Pollock KCVO (1863 1943) was a British Anglican bishop, educator, and author, renowned for his long tenure as headmaster of Wellington College and as Bishop of Norwich. Samuel Laing (1780 1868) from Papdale in Orkney was a Scottish travel writer. He travelled in Scandinavia and northern Germany and published descriptions of these countries. Laing was the first translator of Heimskringla by Snorri Sturluson. This book is a 19th-century traveller's account of Denmark and the duchies of Holstein and Sleswick, offering a unique glimpse into the daily life, social politics, and historical events shaping the region. At the time of writing, the Second Schleswig War was raging and the author provides first-hand observations on its causes and consequences. Beyond the war, the author explores the region's rich history, from the Viking era to the political intrigues of Prussia and Russia, and delves into topics as diverse as education, agriculture, literature, and national identity. The author's insights reveal the complex interplay between tradition and modernity, shedding light on the enduring legacy of the past and the challenges faced by 19th-century society.
