Grieveson". George Culley (baptised 1735 1813) was an English agriculturist. The younger son of Matthew Culley, in early life he concentrated on agriculture, and in particular cattle breeding. He was the first pupil of Robert Bakewell, and with his brother Matthew gained an international reputation. "The Culley breed" at the time referred to sheep, a cross of Bakewell's Leicester breed rams with Teeswater ewes. Visitors came to the Culley farm at Fenton, near Wooler, Northumberland, to see innovations in drainage and crop rotation. Culley published works on agriculture, mostly with John Bailey, and was in correspondence with Arthur Young. He died, after a short illness, at Fowberry Tower, Northumberland, on 7 May 1813. In den Warenkorb8vo, (viii), 195, (3, errata and blank) pp., with the half-title, nicely rebound in contemporary-style calf-backed boards. First edition. One of the key English books in the breeding of livestock. Culley was the first pupil of Robert Bakewell, the greatest cattle breeder of the eighteenth century. Culley and his brothers began farming in Northumberland in 1767; by introducing the new Leicester sheep and adopting the drill cultivation of turnips, their enterprise became highly successful. His Observations on live stock gained a considerable reputation, and went through four editions by 1807. The longest chapters here are on sheep and pigs, but there are remarks as well on horses, cattle, rabbits, mules and asses, goats, deer, and poultry. ÊCulley acquired international fame. Ê"Crowds used to visit his farms to see his experiments, which made an epoch in the agricultural history of Northumberland, and his name was given to a celebrated breed of cattle." --DNB. Smith describes the work as "replete with information for improving the breeds of domestic animals, based on the practice of his great master. Culley quotes all his sources of information; his style is modest, unassuming and attractive. It is a picture of the best management of stock in the eighteenth century. His reputation was world-wide, and his farms in Northumberland were visited by many people, both from home and abroad. The book is a mine of information regarding stock of all kinds."ÑSmith, Early history of veterinary literature, II, pp. 215-6. This first edition is rare. Early ownership inscriptions on half-title of J. Burleigh and Mr. G. Cuming. Dingley 205; Fussell, II, pp. 127-9.
