Provenance: Charles J. MacGarvey (bookplate pasted to inner cover of folding case); Sotheby's NY sale 5350, lot 255, 1985. ---- RARE FIRST EDITION of this pamphlet by the social economist Malthus, who became known above all for his population theory. In contrast to his friend David Ricardo, Malthus was of the opinion that the Corn Law should be retained on the grounds that domestic production should be given priority over foreign imports in order to ensure sufficient agricultural capacity in times of war. In terms of public policy, Malthus was a supporter of the protectionist Corn Laws from the end of the Napoleonic Wars. He emerged as the only economist of note to support duties on imported grain. By encouraging domestic production, Malthus argued, the Corn Laws would guarantee British self-sufficiency in food.
