The Laboratories for Computational Physics & Fluid Dynamics (LCP&FD) are responsible for the the application of advanced analytical and numerical capabilities that are relevant to Navy and DOD programs. LCP&FD has a strong emphasis on the use of the advanced parallel processing supercomputers in research and production computation. LCP&FD has a broad background in advanced computing algorithms, techniques, and applications. LCP&FD objectives are: to develop state-of-the-art analytical and computational capabilities in fluid dynamics and related fields; to establish expertise in parallel processing for large-scale scientific computing; and to perform computational experiments on specific relevant problems using these capabilities. This research was supported by the Office of Naval Research and by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency. The authors discuss shock-generated turbulence as related to the dynamics of hot gaseous channels produced by laser pulses and electric discharges in gaseous atmospheres. The author present an efficient numerical technique which used the flux-corrected transport algorithm and permits automatic adjustment of the time step to account for both types of behavior. Comparisons of two-dimensional calculations to theory and to experimental data on laser channels show good agreement. The numerical results reveal a mechanism by which the distribution of turbulent scale lengths is generated during energy deposition.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This 1999 book describes the implementation of multilevel methods for the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. The general ideas for the algorithms presented stem from dynamical systems theory and are based on the decomposition of the unknown function into two or more arrays corresponding to different scales in the Fourier space. Before describing in detail the numerical algorithm, survey chapters are included on the mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations and on the physics of the conventional theory of turbulence. The multilevel methods are applied here to the simulation of homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows as well as turbulent channel flows. The implementation issues are discussed in detail and numerical simulations of the flows cited above are presented and analysed. The methods have been applied in the context of the direct numerical simulation and are therefore compared to such simulations.
