Date stamped on front cover. Dr. Stickley received his electrical engineering education at the University of Cincinnati, MIT, and Northeastern University. As a Lt. at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory he built the Air Force's first laser in 1960 and became the Chief of the Laser Physics Branch. In 1971 he joined ARPA as Deputy Director of the Materials Sciences Office and later was promoted to Director of that office. During that period he led successful developments of windows and coating for high power IR lasers, modeling and test patterns as a means to design, understand, and monitor semiconductor IC processes, Ho and Er lasers, PtSi staring focal plane arrays, and initiated long-running ARPA programs in GaAs integrated circuits and HgCdTe focal plane array materials processing. In 1976 he joined ERDA as the first Director of the Office of Laser Fusion where he obtained Congressional authorization of the NOVA laser at LLNL and the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator at Sandia. Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is a type of fusion energy research that attempts to initiate nuclear fusion reactions by heating and compressing a fuel target, typically in the form of a pellet that most often contains a mixture of deuterium and tritium. Typical fuel pellets are about the size of a pinhead and contain around 10 milligrams of fuel. To compress and heat the fuel, energy is delivered to the outer layer of the target using high-energy beams of laser light, electrons or ions, although for a variety of reasons, almost all ICF devices as of 2015 have used lasers. The heated outer layer explodes outward, producing a reaction force against the remainder of the target, accelerating it inwards, compressing the target. This process is designed to create shock waves that travel inward through the target. A sufficiently powerful set of shock waves can compress and heat the fuel at the center so much that fusion reactions occur. ICF is one of two major branches of fusion energy research, the other being magnetic confinement fusion. When it was first proposed in the early 1970s, ICF appeared to be a practical approach to power production and the field flourished. Experiments during the 1970s and '80s demonstrated that the efficiency of these devices was much lower than expected, and reaching ignition would not be easy. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, many experiments were conducted in order to understand the complex interaction of high-intensity laser light and plasma. These led to the design of newer machines, much larger, that would finally reach ignition energies. The largest operational ICF experiment is the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in the US, designed using the decades-long experience of earlier experiments. Like those earlier experiments, however, NIF has failed to reach ignition and is, as of 2015, generating about 1 3 of the required energy levels. …

The hearing addressed: Usefulness of space power research to ground-based nuclear reactor systems --Personnel development and educational needs of the universities as they relate to the development of space nuclear power systems --Nuclear power plants for space vehicles developed --and Role of the universities in supporting the space nuclear power technology development. Witnesses from the Air Force, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Energy, the General Accounting Office, Westinghouse Hanford, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory testified. Nuclear power in space is the use of nuclear power in outer space, typically either small fission systems or radioactive decay for electricity or heat. One common type is a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which has been used on many space probes and on manned lunar missions, and another is small fission reactors for Earth observation satellites such as the TOPAZ nuclear reactor. A radioisotope heater unit provides heat from radioactive decay of a material and can potentially produce heat for decades. R The United States tested a nuclear reactor in space for 43 days in 1965. While not yet tested in space, the test of the Demonstration Using Flattop Fission (DUFF) on September 13, 2012 was the first test of a nuclear reactor power system for space since then. Examples of nuclear power for space propulsion systems include nuclear electric rocket, radioisotope rocket, and radioisotope electric propulsion. One of the more explored is the nuclear thermal rocket, which was tested in the NERVA program.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - To achieve energy security and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction objectives, the United States must develop clean, affordable, domestic energy sources as quickly as possible. Nuclear power will continue to be a key component of a portfolio of technologies that meets our energy goals. This book provides a roadmap for the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) research, development and demonstration activities that will ensure nuclear energy remains a viable energy option for the United States.…

This joint hearing was convened to address the serious issue of low-level radioactive waste disposal. The states had been negotiating regional compacts. The hearing was for the purpose of assisting the consideration of what courses of action the Congress should take with regard to those compacts that had been submitted to the Congress and to determine what interim measures might be taken to ensure that the remaining states moved forward to assume responsiblity for the wasts generated in their States.
