First edition. Recording conditions along the Rio Grande at the start of the Mexican War. Tilden's mission was to see if steamboat commu…nications could be opened up at the Presidio de Rio Grande. At that time it was the crossing point for river traffic between Monclova and San Antonio. Tilden journeyed upriver nearly 300 miles, and includes maps in addition to the text which detail the towns, countryside and encounters with Mexicans along the route. This expedition was ordered by General Patterson, the commander of the second division, army of occupation and left on October 1, 1846.
