Nota manoscritta «657» ai contropiatti. Opera preceduta da una prefazione del Mazzini datata 18…settembre 1850. La pubblicazione è importante sotto duplice profilo: la scelta repubblicana nella lotta per l'indipendenza italiana, ma rassicurando i moderati inglesi («the republican party is neither communist, nor subversive, nor unbelieving»); il tentativo di limitare i danni legati alla caduta della Repubblica Romana e alla sconfitta subita nella guerra del 1848 (la Royal War e l'insurrection a Milano). Mazzini era riuscito a sfuggire alla cattura, rientrando a Londra per riprendere il filo della lotta. L'opera accompagna la fondazione del Comitato Nazionale (8 settembre 1850) e il lancio del prestito per finanziare le future cospirazioni. L'editore, Charles Gilpin (1815-1874), quacchero, era un amico di Kossuth. Più volte eletto nelle camere di rappresentanza aveva rilevato nel 1842 la ditta di Edward Fry e la British Library conta 76 titoli da lui pubblicati. in 16° (170 x 105 mm), tela editoriale marrone con fregi impressi ai piatti e al dorso; titoli in oro al dorso, pubblicità editoriale al retro dei piatti, pag.
