In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. John Linton's English translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's semi-autobiographical novel, with the original dust wrapper. The third impression of John Linton's translation of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. This semi-autobiographical novel, first published as The Journal of My Other Self, was written in 1910 by the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) while he lived in Paris. Written in an expressionistic style, with existentialist themes, this was the longest work of prose that Rilke created.Translated into English by John Linton. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, except for a small patch of fading to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper is smart, though slightly sunned, more so to the spine. Small loss to the tail of the spine of the wraps. Fine. book.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor. Second Edition. Second edition in English - originally published in this translation in 1930. Translated from the German by John Linton. Rilke's novel was originally published in German as "Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge" in 1910, and Linton's translation, the first into English, was first published in the US by W. W. Norton in 1930 under the title "The Journal of My Other Self", and in the UK by the Hogarth Press as "The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge" (Woolmer 232). ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt has dulled slightly over the past 70 years. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. The page block edges are quite clean without any noticeable foxing. The binding is straight with no reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a poor only example of the dustwrapper, which is essentially complete, but which has the spine in pieces, and with the shadowing of previous tape repairs to the spine (which originally held it together - now removed). Apart from the damage to the spine, and the tape offsetting, the pale pink dustwrapper is complete, and only slightly marked with age and handling. Very slight loss to the spine ends and corner tips. The dustwrapper is not price-clipped, retaining the original publisher;'s printed price of 7s. 6d. net. ***193mm x 130mm. 243 pages. ***'"The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge" is generally accepted as Rilke's most important prose work. It is autobiographical fiction, for Rilke thinly veils his own experiences under a romantic record of the memories, impressions and vicissitudes of an impoverished Danish poet living in Paris. A masterpiece of creative art and delicate portraiture, it is also an important document, throwing light on the genius of a great poet, whose work is a bold synthesis of Eastern mysticism and western art. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'The book was one of the earliest publications to introduce him to American readers. ---It is a book of quiet, close-knit prose studded with unforgettable scenes, set forth here in precise, analytical descriptions, there in intense lyrical flights of near-poetry.' (Quote taken from another edition of the book) ***A second UK edition of Rilke's "The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge", in very good condition, albeit in a damaged dustwrapper. Quite uncommon in the Hogarth edition. ****For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
