Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Light green pictorial wrappers. 4 by 5 1/2 inches. 112pp, 2pp ads. Folding map. Later printing. An early Niagara Falls guidebook. This book describes 4 "jaunts" or excursions- to the American Falls, the Islands, the Whirlpool and the Canadian side. Sites covered include: Indian Ladder, the Village of Niagara Falls, Bath and Iris islands, Biddle Stair Case, Fort Schlosser, Battle of the Devils Hole, Catlin's Cave, the deaths of Miss DeForest and other accidents, and much more. The folding map at front is titled "Map of Niagara Falls and Guide Table" and shows various routes, listings of hotels and sites, and distances from the ferry and American hotels. The map measures 10 by 14 inches. The text is illustrated with 5 full-page engraved plates showing different views of the Falls and the burning of the Steamer Caroline. There are also smaller engravings throughout the text. There are publisher's ads at the end of the book and the rear cover features a nice engraved ad for the publisher, Andrew Burke. WorldCat lists earlier editions of this work in 1848 and 1849 with authorship attributed to James Faxon. A good copy in lightly soiled wraps. The front cover is chipped at the right side. The text is good with some foxing and spotting to some of the margins. The title page has some browning at the right side. There is a faint stain to the upper margin of some of the book's pages. The map is in excellent shape for its age with some light browning and edgewear. A nice copy of an uncommon work.
